1971 Bedford CFS 350 Chev T400 on Gas
« on: January 31, 2014, 09:17:59 PM »
Hi guys,
I bought my first Bedford van a few weeks ago but unfortunitly I have to sell it as it isn't big enough for my needs. Van is 1971 CFS, has a 350 Chev with Turbo 400 fitted and has approval plate fitted. Has a highway diff ratio fitted but not sure of the origin of the Sailsbury diff conversion. Has HQ stud pattern. Planetry gears are welded up (fun in the rain). It has a Gas Research carby and is dedicated gas with about a 60 litre useable tank in it. Photos show it has 19 inch Performance wheels (drives rough with them on, bad idea) but will be sold with the 5 matching 15inch wheels so it drives nicer. Also has a spare set of rear doors. Has no side door. Has B&M shifter. Alloy bullbar. Tomorrow it gets fitted with a new N70ZZ battery as the old one was sitting for a while and is loosing its charge.
This van is not registered but I have the registration papers from the previous owner I bought it from. I had it inspected for a roadworthy to see what it needed. Come back saying needed a working speedo (old cable not long enough, about $185.00 + fitting), fix some electrical issues (dash lights, change bulbs in a few, get the interior light working etc). Quoted 3 hours by an auto electrician, adjust rear brakes , bleed.
Body will need attention soon and the paint has started to get tiny crazy cracks. Van drives quite good with the 15 inch wheels. Motor pulls like a bull as its set up for towing. Doesnt rev past 4500rpm that much as it needs a bigger gas carby and converter.
Anyhow if your interested, you can ring me on 0417769336. I am on the northside of Brisbane. Worth a look. With a bit of attention, it would be a very cool cruiser and sleeper. Asking $6750.00 ono

No side door, 350 chev, T400? Sounds perfect!
If it was in WA and I needed a second van I'd be HELLA keen!

Good luck with the sale

Interstate enquiries welcome. I will either drive it (if I can borrow a trade plate) or tilt tray it to a Brisbane car carrying depot for free if needed. New N70ZZ battery now fitted. Must be sold to buy next tow car (VY - VZ Crewman SS) and start building the gooseneck trailer for my business.

Hey ash, i know it has nothing to do with beddies, but when you start the goose neck trailer, i would'nt mind seeing the build photos as you go, and the ute.

Hi George,
I will post some during the build.  Since I was a young boy and first seen the 3XY Easy Roller with Peter Brock and a tall dark hair chick (sent a rush of blood to the groin area when I was a teenager) in I think it was Van Wheels magazine in the mid to late 70s, I always wanted a Bedford Van. Mate of mine in Brisbane had a yellow CFS with a 383 T700 in it that was a real good and towed his Sprintcar all over Queensland and NSW racing. Can tell some stories about how much grunt it used to have. I believe it in Tasmania now, lucky bugger.
I have a small business on the side called Zahl 1 Karting. We are expanding to 4 different divisions at the moment. Zahl 1 Karting, Zahl 1 Kompetition or Motorsport division, Zahl 1 Kustom which is the tuning division and my wife will be Zahl 1 Komputer doing websites, web hosting and all that IT stuff.
If I was just staying with the Karting division, the van would be big enough. Trouble is car racing tyres and spares etc take up a lot of room to take too the track. I am struggling with a VZ wagon at the moment which when we race at Lakeside Park, its not too bad as I can race home and get anything that I need and go back in about 25 minutes. Soon as you go to Queensland Raceway at Ipswich or Morgan Park at Warwick, you dont have that ability. Even worse for Interstate race meetings.
Plan is to build a 6 metre + over the tray gooseneck. Its about the safest way to tow anything, not to mention the great signage oppertunity. I have attached some photos of Crewmans with goosenecks to give you the idea.

Hi Marty,
a gooseneck basicly has a 3 inch tow ball installed in the ute tray. The 5th wheel setup looks more like a semi trailer tow hitch. I think 5th wheelers can tow more weight but take up more room in the tray so it makes it not useable as such. Pictures attached to help explain the difference. The trailers are basicly the same except for the tow hitch.

Have you thought about a tray back bedford, the kiwis did a BEAUTIFUL yellow bedford truck. Look forward to seeing what you come up with. When you say karting, im guessing thats go karts. Here is a pic of my kart with its hand controls, still a work in progress, still need to sort out the hydraulic lines for the brakes. Do you have a web site for your karting company ash ?

Hi George,
I have a business on the side called Zahl 1 Karting ( www.z1k.com.au ) and it will give you some basic idea of what we might be able to do. New website coming soon. Besides my normal job and working for myself, I am also the President of the Queensland Superkart Club Inc ( www.qldsuperkart.org ) so as you can guess I am a bit time poor sometimes. Basicllly I look after all forms of karting from kids to pensioners. The top of the Superkart food chain is the 250 International as attached. Will do 250 kph, pull 3G in accelleration, braking and cornering and do 8 second 1/4 miles. As you can imagine they are very physical.
I also like that yellow beddy truck if its the 6 wheel one with a sleeper cab. I also like the pink one for $15000.00 but cant justify that sort of money for it. For some reason CFL vans dont come up for sale too often the way I like them. Was a white CFL in W.A I think with a Chev etc but didnt have time to fly over there and have a look when it was for sale. I will sell this one I have now but I am sure I will have another in the future. Such a good toy with a Chev in them.
If you want any kart stuff, just give me a call or email me through the website and I would be happy to help you out with your project. My number is 0417769336.
