id say it would have 2 be a warantee issue scotty,
the hole shoulda been installed by the engine builder if it was 100% needed.

id get the guy 2 take the engine straight 2 your engine builder, unless its in a different state or 100,s of miles away.

id get the buyer 2 ring ur engine builder at least.

who in their right mind starts an engine without taking the heads n sump off 2 inspect if bought second hand for a start, even if it was a fresh engine id just pull it down that far to make sure 2 be sure.

bear in mind that ski boats also run near flat strap most the time,
was the motor built for flat strap, or just short bursts every now n then?

ski boat driver can be ruthless on motors.

im nearly positive ud need 2 open up some water ports in the heads if fitting a motor 2 a ski boat.
was his water pickup sufficiant?
dosent take long for a motor 2 overheat if its not getting sufficiant cooling.
especially if its getting its ring reved out.

also are ski boats supposed 2 run thermistats?
or are they taken out to get the full flow?

id think no thermistat. maybe it was left in n cooked the motor?

Whenever i have sold anything to someone in good faith, i have always let them make the final dicission as to whether its what they want or not. If i was buying a motor from someone for a specific reason, and i didnt know its history i would get a engine builder to have a look at it first. If you sold it in good faith then the buyer takes responsibility once the cash has changed hands. You have to stand firm Doof   ;) Thats just my opinion folks.... :)

Something that happenedto me once, l sold a good engine(308), they fitted it, and there was heaps of crank case ventilation. So l pulled it dowm and reringed it, it done the same. We ended up finding out they changed the manifold (non polition and polition are diffrent). But it realy is hard to say without seeing the engine and with out fitting it. On the other hand, jt should of been picked up on the dyno if there was something wrong ::) :-[ :o :o

I had the same issue when i first got into water skiing. my boat was a 16ft centre mount running a 308 holden motor. the issue i had was with the motor sitting at such steep angle (nose down) the air gets traped in the back of the heads (the highest point of a cooling system), no iternal changes needed to be made to the motor but I was told the water after running threw the block had to exit out the back of the heads therefore a hole needs to be made and tapped to fit a brass fitting (around the same size as a heater hose)

I ended up tapping the manifold and running a small hose out the side to bleed the air out, it also let me know my water pump was working. I didnt run a thermistat but I have seen some boats with them,

with out knowing much about the boat or the motor, its too hard to know exactly what happened
And you thought owning a bedford was going to be easy.

This is the desciption that he has given ebay.
The block has 5cracks,also has 2sleeves.Also looks to have 2different
brands of pistons. Heads dont have steam holes in them causing it to burn out head gasket in 10minutes.2of
the cylinder bores are extremely badly pitted.Motor was not rebored. Motor should not have been
assembled with bores that bad, causing the rings to chew out & not seal, causing motor to excessively
blowing out the breather & pushing oil out breather. The block is stuffed.Needs replacing.

My engine builder said today that he thinks he has ran it hard lean and hot

doof you sold it in good faith , then thats it im sorry but I agree with john , buyer beware ,and  Ihave been caught myself , had he pulled off the heads and found a problem before he put it in his boat then maybe id be more sympathetic , but crap happens.
