Hello everyone, 
new to the group, just picked up a 76' CF, I beleive. It had a Holden 186 engine in it which is a bit old, I have a 202 which I want to put in. Does anyone know the best way to do this, ie. through the front or out from under. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  how i did it 
the easiest way seems to be to unbolt the crossmember, 
lift up the body (rotating about rear wheels) 
then wheeling out the engine/crossmember/gearbox all in one go. 
u can either make up a trolley to hold the thing level. or the easier way seems to be to put a trolley jack under the rear of the gearbox 
to easy, dont forget your vitamins to help lift the body

How much is involved with removal of the Crossmember??How many bolts,Is it easy to get to them etc...

ummm, 
there are guys here that have done hundreds of these, ive done it twice so i might be making things up/ missing things. 
>2 bolts each side above the wheels (i think they were for the actual crossmember. 
>there are two long threaded rods (one each side, i think theyre called control arms) that need to be undone at the wheel end. these are a bitch later on since u have to hold them out of the way while u lift up the body. 
>i had my steering column undone already, but u would probably need to undo that. 
>brake lines probably need to be drained and undone from the calipers 
>a good idea to drain out most of the tranny fluid, and the forward end of the driveshaft needs to come out of the gearbox (undo the yoke?

) 
>the gear shifter would have to go, as would the speedo cable. 
>any wires that go to the battery or the dash

>mine didnt have one, but the heater hoses need to go. so do the radiator hoses. 
>tranny cooler/oil cooler lines if you have them 
how did i go? did i miss anything. 
basically what i did was rig up a block and tackle to the beams of the shed, made up a brace out of rhs and put it under the chassis rails at the front of the engine bay. took the weight of the suspension, undid stuff till the crossmember was free, then lifted the beddie up as far as we could. dont forget to chock the back wheels!!

Thanks for the info Conrad. 
Have checked a few things out and it seems that this is the way to go ie lift the front etc. 
Will be doing it next week, after i've cleaned the 202 up and given it a lick of paint. I'll post a bit of a description of how things go when done.

should be a piece of p**s switching a 186 for a 202, should just bolt straight up. 
bloody cheater, or maybe i just deliberately make things hard for myself  
while we're on the topic, do u want a nice fibreglass engine cowl to go over your shiny new 202? anyone?

no not an engine COW 
an engine coow-l. 
its an engine cover, um. the thingy that stops the engine being a cupholder while on long trips. 
the thingy in the footwell. 
sorry, i have a habit of making up my own words for things. is it actually called an engine cowl? 
i dunno. 
but yeah. its the large engine cover in the cabin. 
i had to cut the bejesus outta my floor so its no good to me now. it was over the top of a 202 though.

or a thingyma whatsyacall it that covers the dooflakcy motorbittybit.

I call it an engine cover.

sound-proofing wise,does a fibre-glass cover cut down noise,or should i stick with the steel one??

  noise, WHAT NOISE?? 
um i have never had a steel cover. 
but the fibreglass one made the sounds from the engine bay go much quieter (new word bonus!!) 
although i wouldnt say that these sounds should be called noise, more like music  
i remember the days when i would drive down the street without the cover on, with the air-filter removed. 
USING A CAN OF AEROSTART LIKE NOS!!! haha! 
tell me of another car that can do that!

Have removed the engine as you guys said, it rolled out pretty damn easy. Only prob was the four bolts connecting to the chassy were a bit of a bitch, but persistance paid off. Took about 2 hours. 
Will switch all the gear onto the 202 and plug it back in tommorrow.

i had to let most of mine sit in WD-40 for a day, 
i am really good at ripping the heads of bolts so im extra careful

When i pulled the engine out i noticed the rubbers on the control arm where it joins the chassi rail were a bit flat, does anyone have an answer to were i could get some new ones, and when looking for parts for the front end i've been told it is the same front end as another car such as a torana, ?? any clues

Thanks for the help guys, 
popped the 202 engine in, had no real dramas, pretty cool way to change an engine, heaps different to a VE Valiant. Now will just go through the rest of the beast and change any parts that need changing.
