Title: Ignition switch
Post by: Drifter on November 13, 2015, 03:12:08 PM
Hi and advice needed.
I'm trying to take my ignition switch apart as my steering lock is stuck on and I'm faced with the picture attached - after looking at this pic up close,  am i right in presuming that the screws holding the ignition housing together have been broken off at the heads.    Is this the case? , or am i missing some other way of getting it off.

Yeah when fitted at factory the screws sheer at the heads when fitted.
I just use a 4 " grinder with a 1mm disk and cut a slot across the screw,
Then use a flat screwdriver to get them off.
I have also mig welded a small bolt onto the sheered surface and then used a spanner.
Either way has worked for me in the past.

I recently had to do the same on my Subaru, I had trouble trying to cut slots in the bolts as it was still on the car, I ended up using a punch and hammer to start bolts turning, then could use fingers to turn, I replaced with a standard bolt, make it easier next time

Or drill a hole in center and use an easyout.
Never tried this way but i recon it would work.

Just tried the small pin punch idea no luck, wont budge at all...not sure about the cutting blade idea looks like it will damage the surrounding casing.  maybe that's not a problem?     I just tried drilling a small hole,  as you suggested that hardly made a mark on the bolt at all, broke two small drill tips so far,    Ill keep at it,   looks like a trip to Nowra to buy another drill.

Try a dermel with a small cutting disk
If u drill use a double sided 1/8

Thanks fellas - It's off -  the whole thing was stuffed anyway, so I ended up cutting the whole thing off.
with the grinder.
For anyone's future reference... I mistook the very centre broken part as seen in the previous pic as the bit I had to try and get out,  thinking this was a broken bolt down the centre,   I did not realising this was all part of the screw.,    once I had it off i  found out that the whole shiny piece unscrewed...not just the broken centre bit....had I realised what you guys were trying to tell me  i probably could have gotten it off without cutting the whole mechanism off - live and learn.

"Thanks again - mechanical genius I'm not"

No worries at all - i'm in no hurry, if it's there all good,,,don't stress though.

Hey Marty, can you tell me what sort of diff you have in your van?  Im still trying to find out the best and easiest alternative...just can't seem to get a straight answer trolling through at the forums...

Both vans have hi-way diffs.
I cant really tell what they are out if as ive never really understood
The diff concept.
Its always been confusing to me.
I do have a bedford hi way diff sitting in the parts shed
Ill go and check it out a bit later and post up a few pictures

the hi way diffs were the diff centers out of vauxhall cresta cars (2.6 & 3.3l 6 cyl) but most now go to a HQ Holden diff center cut and swap. then you can change the centers to a lot of diff ratios.

i put a cresta in my old diff but getting the seals etc are hard to find.. so stumped up and got the diff center done alot happier now.

i'm running 202 red, 1-tonner box and HQ diff center with CF hubs and breaks.

Really appreciate the information,  - I'm starting to get my head around the whole diff thing,
If I can retain the Beddy wheels id be happy with that,  so some searching to do.

This diff has the original beddy studpattern.
Might be about a week till its blasted and painted black.
Enamel.

yeah if you want to keep the same bedford stud pattern a diff center chop is the way to go.

with my set up i can get a top speed of 110-112 kmh  maxed out on the flat.

Thanks for the info mate - that's all the speed I need - Seems like the easiest way and not have to deal with disc break conversion for the front end.

I have a 3.5:1 diff in my traytop and in theory, pulls 3000 rpm for 105 km/hr. Well under max RPM.....

Thanks rumax - what did you get the diff out of.?

Would you believe from a CF in a wrecking yard. Duel wheels and all. :)
It's a chev 12 bolt.

But I do have a diff out of another van that donated parts for my restoration... single wheel B/W 3.23 diff- I think.  Tag on it said it was out of a Valiant CL??? would drop another 200 rpm @ 100
Happy to sell for the right price.. and that isn't too high.
Have a side door and pair of rear doors as well....
Located in Adelaide.....

I had a dream of doing another CF... but have realised I do not have the time or funds.... :(

yea the nice thing with the Holden center is the gear ratios are a lot so you can mix and mach to what you want.. i think mine is 3.08 : 1 was out of an HQ i think. and a lot of them around. i also have a 5 speed Holden box but the 4 speed seems ok for me.

im having a ford 9inch fitted at the moment with a 3.0 ratio centre as the one I had was very a bodgy set up and the ratio was 2.75 which was just a touch to tall , I should get pinky back next week and am very interested to see what difference it makes as 100kph was 1500 revs with the auto lock up switch on, should have a bit more go and still get reasonable economy

thanks fellas - the fog is clearing - I really appreciate the input...

I can get my head around everything else but the diff had me stumped...I'm sure I had a diff from a hq in my old one..but my memory of it is to fuzzy.......but I remember it was narrow and I had to have the wheels reversed to get it looking right - and I ended up with two spare wheels,  which I don't want  trying to get it right this time around...

Rumax I think Adelaide is a bit to far from Huskisson - seems everyone is a long way from Huskisson..
