Title: Bedford bonnet hinge
Post by: Gunning on October 09, 2015, 03:52:13 PM
Gday all, I had some loose, flogged out hinges for my bonnet, I had a lot of lateral movement that allowed the bonnet sides to bang into the side of engine bay . I thought I better get it sorted before it being painted, long way off there
The problem was a lot of wear around a lot of the pivot or rotating ....hinged areas maybe some rubber or another material had perished also
My original plan was to drill out and use something like shoulder bolts, maybe bearings or nylon to help tighten
I had a small gas strut lying around which made me think of trying it, the strut worked great for tightening everything up without removing anything...but, I'm a little out with the position. At the moment I can't close it 100%
Good news, it tightened it up, no lateral movement, it's an easy lift strut which works great. I thought it was wrong sort off strut
Now back to the drawing board to relocate strut position

Hey, Gunning. Best way to locate the strut is to have the bonnet closed and with one end fixed, put a pencil (of similar) in the end of the strut and draw an arc. Then open it, extend the strut, and do the same. Where the two intersect is where you mount it!

Works well if the arcs intersect and sounds a bit obvious, but until a tradesman showed me this many years ago (on a tool box)....... :)

Gday all, I've managed to locate a spot on hinge that a gas strut can be used and allows bonnet to close and open 100%, also tightens hinges up. I believe there is a better spot as at moment at the very top ( open ) position there is no support from strut
The latch on left side hinge is still used to lock it in up position though
Not good enough though..... I'll keep playing, may try a longer strut

When I learn to resize a pic I'll upload some
