Title: Trouble posting pictures? How do I
Post by: IWander on January 11, 2015, 08:47:37 PM
Hi, I am having trouble posting some pictures of a twin seat that I wanted to show to Fat Bed.
I had a couple of shots at it but they are always too big.
I tried to send just one at a time as well... no joy.

Does anyone know how to shrink photo's to a size that the forum can accept?

My photo's are about 2.9 Mb. (Strange really because I've posted photo's from my phone before & they worked.)  Oh yeah, by the way these are from my Samsung phone.

I've tried converting them to mpeg's from 4gp & that works on my desktop & they display, but they are still too large for here.

A lot of the size of digital photos is the EXIF included (camera details, date, time etc), just removing this would shrink your image heaps.

I use a graphics program called Irfanview, is fast, lightweight (although has heaps of features) and above all FREE.  http://www.irfanview.com/
and here is a good tutorial on resizing and cropping images http://www.somewhere-in-time.net/tutorial/irfanview/
One thing the tutorial doesn't show is removing the EXIF data, so before you "save" on the "Save As" part, a side box should display next to the image to the right, be sure to uncheck "Keep original EXIF data" (uncheck them all, just leave "Save as progressive jpg"), and save, making sure format is .jpg

Irfanview is a great program, you can crop, resize, auto adjust the colours, sharpen image, add effects, etc. etc. Resizing to a width of 600 - 800 pixels fits okay in the forum.

What I do is open the photo in Microsoft paint and reduce the size to 10%. This makes the files about 160 kb. They are saved as JPEG's.
The same file can be adjusted to any size. This one is 800x600 and is  360kb @ 230 DPI... the original file is 1.5 mb

And yes, I am no fan of MS, but if it's free and works... :) :) :)

Oh and here is the photo I just fiddled with. If anybody wants more details on how to, just PM me and I will write something...
Cheers
Russell

PS-from the 'attachments & other options' menu below......
"Restrictions: 5 per post, maximum total size 3000KB, maximum individual size 800KB"

Rumax, I downloaded your image and resaved it with irfanview (just removing the EXIF info) and file size went down from 354.57kb to 118.43kb

Once you uncheck remove image data option resizing an image can be as simple as file/open and then file/save, or if you use irfanview as your default viewer (like I do) it's just double click the image and then file/save (or ctrl s)
Super easy, Super fast and Super free

I know this sounds stupid like most things i say n post.  :D
But try sending the picture to yourself in an iMessage or to another mobile phone, save it.

then send it back to the phone your using to originally post. Save it again.

Then use that picture to post on buga.  ;)

It works everytime for me.  :o ;D

Dont ask me why or how i came about doing it originally
I think it had something to do with the few bundy rum n cokes id consumed. ;D

Thanks heaps guy's & gal's. There is a lot of great info in these replies.

I have heard of irfanview BusyKiwi & Hobbit, & actually I think I might have it on one of my laptops. (not that I know how to use it just yet)
I have seen what you are talking about busy, when a computer opens a folder & the extra details come up as read only, lossless or something similar when I have altered pictures in the past & gone to save them.

Rumax has a good idea too coz most people would have paint as part of MS Word I would think. I know I have seen it on my desktop or somewhere. Oh yeah & it has that magic component everyone likes.... FREE.

Nothing is stupid Marishka if it works. Some might say its thinking outside the box. I can use that idea when I'm away from a desktop or my lappys.

Thanks too Dano & Bedfordcrazy for the link for shrink pic & explanation of how it does it automatically.
Although if I set shrink pic up, I'm thinking it might take over all my photo files & set itself as the default program & I'm not sure I would like it to do that.

Right now I'll have a look, see if I have irfanview & give that a try first. If it turns out too hard I'll go down the list that everyone suggested. ( shrink pic is a close second).

Once again, thanks heaps for the suggestions.  ;D

Hi IWanda, shrink pic only works when you want to email or upload pics say to here. It does not change the size or structure of your pics that you have in say your pictures folder. It just recognises that a pic is to big to post and auto resizes it for the post. If you go to print the same pic you post it will be the same size as when you took the pic, so you will always have the original size pic in your folder.

Thats handy to know george, thanks. The other photo's I posted in here (http://bit.ly/1woyoBm) had to be cropped to make them fit.

So I followed the link from Dano for shrink pic & downloaded that to try.
