Title: NEW GEARBOX NEEDED -
Post by: joshua on June 26, 2014, 07:05:56 PM
I just got my car on the road and the gear box has died. it was a three speed manual. Im looking for the best solution for a 1979 LWB Bedford.

I dont want to put a 3 speed back in as it was so bloody slow. Can anyone give me the best solution with the guidelines of over 100km an hour, better on petrol if that is possible. and even better does anyone know where i could best find that solution...

Josh

I have used a CRS adaptor plate to fit a T700 to a 202, works pretty well, but I reckon you loose a few HP in doing it.

Also look at your diff...do you have a highway diff ( High speed )or town diff (low speed)
my guess is you prob have a low speed dif hence its been working the gear box real hard...
just saying.... ;D

It is a town diff so yeah your totally right wendy. I have always planed to change it but just not this soon.. Im trying to find the best solution to keep all four wheels the same stud pattern, make it go 100km an hour and have 4 gears.... best fuel economy (i know its a bedford) would be great as well....

Hi Josh,
I have changed my 3 speed to a 5 speed Celica gearbox and taken about 500 RPM 's off the motor at 100k's and it is now roughly 20 percent better on fuel. The other comments are right though in regards to the diff, I have a highway diff in mine and there are other better solutions but it all comes at a price$. in my limited understanding a 4 speed will still be a 1:1 ratio so an overdrive gear is needed like on the 5 speed Celicas. There are quite a few posts about these conversions and I found them very helpful when I tackled mine. I am very happy with mine and it is better to drive.

Hey Dave,

thanks so much! that is the what I have been looking for. I have been recommended celiac 5 speed and  xd borg wagner or toyota W56. Would you know which celica 5 speed I should be looking for? What would the better solutions entail. I want to make this thing as good as it can be.

Im not a mechanic.. but through getting this beauty on the road am slowly teaching myself.

Josh,
Unless you get a diff with a lower than 1:1 ratio for the top gear, you will use the same engine revs (unless you change the diff as well)
Have a look at the holdenpedia link above. Look at the" toyota supra and celica page". It has a list of different gearboxes and their ratio's.

That should answer a lot of your questions.

Kind regards

Joshua

Yes  it's a good cheap option, not as good 5 speed with over drive, but none of that matters until you change the diff ration, thats your biggest issue.

I am setting up a Tarago 5 spd, same bell housing and internals as Supra but has remote shifter
also have f150 LSD 3.73 ratio with studs set for Mazda 4WD

remote shifter would mean its not inserted into the rear of the box it would be something like linkages from the shifter to the box, or probably cables rather than that.

When you fit the Toyota 5 speeds & adaptor to the back of a red motor they are longer than the 4 speeds and the shifter ends up being just behind your hips when sitting in a beddy seat.

The Tarago box with the remote (cable) shifter will let you mount the shifter in a more comfortable position.

Hope this helps.

is the gearstick to far back...

It took a little bit to get used to the position but I would not not say it is too far back. I used the original gearstick that has 2 bends in it and welded it onto the Celica one as low as possible and the throw is not too far.

I will be faced with the same problem of the shift being too far back.
I am thinking of doing something similar to this.

were running a T5 5speed behind our turboed 202
Ray made up a linkage to bring it back to a very comfortable position.
The 5 speed sure makes a difference on freeway driving
the turbo moves her along nicely too!

Wendy,

How do you pick up reverse?
Don't you have to depress the shift to get it or am I missing something here?
