Title: slotted disc rotors
Post by: ben on January 01, 2009, 12:20:06 PM
is there any reason why to improve heat dispersion you cant just carefully cut groves into your disc rotors with an angle grinder then finish them off with a metal file or something? rather than spending hundreds of dollars on new slotted disc rotors?

thats something id leave 2 the profesionals ben, ur life depends on ur brakes,
if the roters were $500 each id still buy them.
doin that kinda stuff (grinding slots) urself might be dangerous.

Ben the slots are to help in cooling the rotor. Dont use the grinder!! I think they cast them with the groves.

You can get your rotors slotted as the slots are just cut in after manufacture, however the rotor needs to be heat treated/tempered again.

Also the slotting doesn't really aid in braking performance at all. Don't be mislead into thinking the slots will help prevent brake fade. All the slots do is help prevent glazing of the pads, and you're not going to glaze your pads unless you drive like you're on a race track.

last time i bought slotted rotors (which is all i buy) the price difference on common stocked items fom non slot to slot was very small,

i found these good for emergency braking as your brakes are not really made for hard use like shane said. so you get better braking for longer and if some fool cocks up and you need to stop your brakes will do it many more times over. or if your not really concentrating.

also i have found they are less prone to warp as they will stay cooler, also to help at the end of a rather long hard stop try and let the brakes off and roll, if you cant roll just let em off...

keeps the heat  off your rotors in that one spot where your pads sit. apparently not good.
