Title: NEED HELP PLEASE
Post by: Maws1948 on March 16, 2014, 08:56:36 AM
Hi all
Can anyone help me with the following question?
I have a 1985 Bedford with a Holden motor and a three speed automatic gearbox, which chugs along at around 90...if I'm lucky...down hill is of course much faster  ;D
I have a Getz that I don't really want to sell and would like to know if anyone can give me advise as to whether the van will be capable of actually towing the car?
I did have two automatic transmission coolers, however one was is rather the worse for wear after hitting a kangaroo many, many kilometres ago. I was told one is sufficient if not towing so I can assume by this that I will have to have it fixed...IF THE VAN CAN ACTUALLY TOW MY CAR BEHIND.
Thank you

Maureen

Hi Maureen,

If camper has a certified tow hitch then yes you can tow either a trailer or small car provided you do not exceed the manufacturers GVM (this should be on compliance plates and noted on registration papers) and in your case according to wikipedia is 3375kgs. So to answer your question you will need to weigh the camper and then weigh the Getz and add weights together to see if you are below the 3375kgs. You will also need to allow say 75kgs for the certified A-Frame that will need to be mounted to Getz or the weight of trailer you plan to put Getz on.

This is how it works in WA but I am sure it will be the same Aussie wide.

Greg :-)

Hi Greg,

Thank you for replying, was beginning to think nobody reads posts here.

From what you have said I think the prospect is doomed before I start, as the van already weighs 3 tonnes  >:(

Guess I'll just have to sell the Getz after all

I didn't reply, cos I wasn't sure. Before you sell the Getz, ring the local cop shop/transport department. After all, they SHOULD know the rules. I think it depends on the trailer having brakes & weight of tow van.

Hi Rumax,

Thanks, what I didn't mention was it would be towed with an A frame and not on a trailer, as I really think a trailer would be asking too much of the poor old van...and motor.
Cheers,

Maureen

My white van towed that with the commodore V6 with ease, trailer was 800kg and custom van is all steel so would weigh a bit more than 800kg

so far the only info i've been able to find is that if there is no defined tow capacity for the vehicle you use the vehicle weight multiplied, it was like 1.5 or something like that, which meant i should be able to tow near on 2000kg!

I towed my red van back from Melbourne with ease. My Grey traytop weighs 2000kg, red truck 1700 kg plus the trailer. And I had a crook running 186/trimatic and 3.54 diff- 80km easy, 100 was noisy (and chewed the fuel) - averaged about 12 mpg (22 l per 100k).

I don't think theres a question of weather a certain motor can do it, more about weather its legal or not!

Hi Maureen,

Agree with Rumax and before selling check with transport dept. as they will clear up the question of towing capacity and also be able to give some information on draw bar requirements. Overall the power of engine will keep you cruising but might take a little longer to get there and will most likely make some hills feel like mountains.

Hi Maureen, George again, try these unlikely suspects, if they can't help with your motor  then know one can. Good luck. Feel free to email me if you need any other advice, that's what makes BUGA number 1.

Hi Mureen

If you are using an a frame I would think the van should tow it, the holden 6 and trimatic is a pretty good combo, do you know what ratio your diff is, that has an effect on preformance and cruising speed, and when bedfords came out they had a ration of 4:00 to 1 and they would only get up to bout 80kph. Thats why you see talk of "Highway Diffs"  they tend to have ratios between 3.5 to 2.87 for improved top speed cruising.

With its weight near 3 tonnes thats preety heavy, Id be looking to put the van on a diet or possibly go for a later model 5 speed auto (with overdrive) to better use the power of the engine.

APPARENTLY I'M A GUMBIE[

Gumbys are recurring characters in Monty Python's Flying Circus, characterized by a very distinctive appearance. Gumbys are portrayed with toothbrush moustaches, wear handkerchiefs on their heads[1] which are knotted at the corners, wire-rimmed spectacles, braces, Fair Isle knitted tank tops, a 1950s shirt rolled up to the elbows (without the detachable collar), trousers rolled up above their knees and gumboots. The characters usually hold their arms in an ape-like position, speak loudly and slowly, and pronounce words syllable by syllable. Though created by John Cleese, the Gumbys were most often played by Michael Palin. Graham Chapman, Terry Jones and Cleese also had noticeable solo turns as Gumbys. Palin's Gumby voice was used to announce the show title in series three

Warren,

Have no idea what the ratio is...but yes it does need to go on a diet and I have finally found someone who can do just that by stripping it of a few extra kilos of unwanted weight.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :o :o :o :o :o :o
