Title: Lost the Privilege!
Post by: Jock on December 23, 2008, 03:24:03 PM
May I ask why you would take the privilege of deleting your own posts away?
That's a huge part of the forum - modifying and deleting existing posts...

Jd

Ahh this is a good question grasshopper. What happens when you allow people to delete their own posts is that people will make a post with a smart
arse comment to start an argument and then once people start replying the person who made the smart arse comment deletes their original post.
It started happening on here so I stopped everyone from deleting their own posts. Anyway theres no need for people to be able to delete their posts.
The idea of forums is so that all information is available for ever and obviously this doesn't happen if posts start getting deleted.

I dont know of any other forum on the www that actually allows you to delete your own posts. Cant be that huge a part of a forum?

Att: Forum Members

Shane has just informed me that we have lost the privilege of deleting our own posts.
So if you need to delete a post that is no longer valid or you would like to simply remove one of your own posts - BAD LUCK GRASSHOPPERS! ;)

So now if you would like something deleted you must ask the almighty ShaneJ or a moderator to remove what it is that you would like deleted.
If something is no longer valid or you want to remove it - should you have the freedom to be able to delete what you have written?  ???

Some feedback on this would be good. Personally I think we should all be able to delete any of our own posts - saves the moderators having to
do it and saves time, everytime you want something deleted you have to ask someone to delete it?  :-\

I understand your issue Jock, but I cant fault Shane's logic, and whilst I can see many sound reasons for removing your own post it would be difficult to fault Shane's logic.

I was going to ask the same question regarding our inability to modifying posts because I often post full of spelling mistakes and cant even make sense of my own post, but I reckon I agree with Shane, so adding another post with a retraction or a correction is the answer.

It is like just emails youve got to think about what you wrote before you post as it is a pretty wide audience, and I cant see Shane or one of the other moderators refusing a request to remove a post if we have a sound reason they seem fairly reasonable guys to me.

The ability to modify posts is back now.

What happened during my last security up date was a timer was setup to disable modifying posts after 15 minutes. 15 minutes is generally enough time to fix spelling mistakes and what have you.
I may end up applying this again at a later date.

As for deleting posts, I don't have a problem doing it for people on the rare occasion that it would be required. I very much doubt the other mods would have a problem with this either.

for people that have slight spelling difficulties (i do) you can download and use "mozilla firefox"

it has a built in spelling correction system and is less prone to virus's then the other browsers.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/)

i can also see the point both ways with the deleting... i have been on forums where people have cracked it with other members and deliberately deleted all their post... makes a mess of the forum if they are a regular poster.... and they know it! modifying can also be the same as deletion as people have emptied their posts and just left a row of six or so numbers or letters to fulfill the minimum post requirement.

are there people on here that cant be trusted?? i have not seen anything like that. but then ive been busy lately.

This is exactly right, you've actually backed up my reason for doing this.
The problem is that in the time it takes people to realise that what they have said is wrong, people have already read it and taking it the wrong way.

isnt it better to delete the post in 3 mins.. if someone sees it well thats no good but if we cant delete it it could offend 20 30 people before a moderator gets on to delete it.. shane you cant tell me your online 24/7 can you?

or is it better not to post at all?

If you make a post and then realise that it might offend someone, simply modify it. Doesn't get much easier than that.

42 people have read this thread and only 2 people so far have a problem with my decision. Why?

This will always be a touchy subject. Both arguments are valid. The right to modify or delete your post needs to be kept. As does the integrity of the forum, posts can not be made then deleted or modified as we could end up with a lot of edited posts that don't mean anything.

A solution could be that after a set period of time only a moderator can edit/delete a post. How long does it take to realize you've stuffed up and put you foot in your mouth? 15m 30m 1h 2h

Sounds perfect to me. And this is pretty well how every other forum on the interweb is setup.

So let me get this right, the only argument so far to have the option to delete your own posts is so that we can post things that will offend some people but be able to delete it so that we dont offend a lot of people?

Am I right?

I personally don't think this a major item.

New Policy - Editing and Deleting Posts

Once a post is made you can edit or delete it up to 2 hours after it is made. After that a Moderator will need to edit or delete it, leaving an explanation.

Well said SandB, it is more important to think before posting, than to be able to delete after the fact.

The policy outlined by Hammers seems fair to me, I don't think I have had to delete a post of mine since I've been on the interweb :D, but as a moderator I have had to delete posts that were defamatory, abusive, or rude.

We have to remember that there is very little way to get across the subtlety of the spoken word, the humor, sarcasm and stupidity can very easily be misconstrued.

So think twice, post once :D

you cant have it both ways .first you call for mods to tighten things up and when they do you complain .... what the???? .  proof read BEFORE you hit the send button .If your intent is to offend people then run down the street naked and leave this site alone and no i wont be deleting/editjng this ..... enough said

If I could 'modify' I would but I seem to have lost that option aswel?

I was referring to the part where forums only allow you to edit your posts for a short period of time.

Personally I'm of the opinion, that if you put your foot in your mouth you should wear it. It don't look that bad! I've seen some fashion out there that makes walking around with your foot in your mouth look like Dolche & Gabbana! .......Hang on are we talking about the same thing here? ::)
