Hello everyone,
Firstly thank you to all of you who have given me so much advice about Bedfords given that I have very little background info! much appreciated.
I have purchased my very first bedford and its a dream come true so wish me luck it goes well =) I will pick it up later this week and post some pics for everyone.
I have a few questions to get started please:
1. RUST: while I make my way around to fixing the rusty spots on the van, what is the best way to keep the rust at bay so that I slow it down as much as possible?
Would the rust preventers sold in car shops do the trick? or would that material u buy which turn rust into a black primer surface be a good option?
2. Where do i go about buying an oil filter and petrol filter? Can i get them from say repco? im in Auckland. I have purchased the petrol additive for lead, thanks Gordon.
3. What do u recommend be the best type of oil to use on the slant 4 engine?

Hi walzaher,
I could help with the oil filter selection.
(2) The Ryco filter company website suggests a Z418 fits the Vauxhall OHC slant 4 engines.
If you don't get Ryco in the land-of-the-long-white-cloud, remember 1970's Holden Toranas and Vaux Vivas also had this engine- get to know your Repco guy and cross reference their catalogues.

Congratulations Waseem, now the fun starts.
Don't buy new spark plugs. I've got a brand new spare set here that you are welcome to. No use to me now that I am doing the V8 conversion. Just remind me next time you drop by.
Andrew's right, Ryco is the way to go. The Bedford is listed in their catalog.

This is really helpful, I see they have a branch here so I can pick some up.
They don't have anything for a fuel filter, these engines do use a fuel filter right??

They didn't come out standard with a fuel filter as far as I know. The factory fuel line is mostly metal except for short rubber flex pipe at each end, so there isn't much space to fit a fuel filter unless the factory pipe has been modified at some stage. If your van is still running the standard barrel type air filter housing bolted to the firewall then I can confirm that the part number for the air filter cartridge is Ryco A89. Hope this helps.

Just checked the oil filter on my slant 4 and can confirm that it is a Ryco Z221. These are readily available at Repco or Supercheap.

It's handy to fit a generic clear inline fuel filter near the engine, in case there is crap in the fuel tank or line, also you can see if the fuel is getting to the engine in case of breakdown.

And put it before the fuel pump, so as to keep the crud out of it

1. Where is the best place to hunt down a timing belt for the slant 4 engine? i found this on ebay from the UK but would there be a closer place to buy from?

I bought my last one on eBay too. Even with the postage cost from the UK it was cheaper than buying one locally.
