Title: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on October 03, 2008, 09:16:29 PM
Hi guyes thought Id give you's an update on my camper as you saw in my gallery the rust was cut out under the pedals &the floor was painted I have moved 1 window back & panneld 2 off the seat bases were cut down 2 inches & the mew seats fitted I speuced up the dash a little so the cockpit is done the ply has been cut in for the floor so I can work off it to do the roof As you can see in the new lot of photos in my gallery I have taken the pop top off to check under for rust Just as well as a few small spots had started I have cleand up the gutters also that rubbery stuff they put it togeather with seames to shrink away from the metal & the moisture gets in & the rust starts You's all should check this out this seems to be the beddie's worst spot for rust so get into it now before it's too late By the way did you notice I can get it into the shed now just as well take the roof off & it bloddy rains Cheers Reid

Hi Reid, looking good, thanks for the updates and pics. Was it a big job getting the pop top off? and I noticed that your battery is in the passenger door step is that a preferred spot for you? Thanks for the tips on rust, if it stops raining today I might pop the top and have a looksee around the seams, also how and what did you treat your gutters with, I noticed they are painted a black colour, is that paint or some sort of compound? you are doing a great job with the resto mate and its really encouraging for us, keep up the good work  ;)

Hi Eddy thank's To get the top off I backed the campa in under the back porch of the house & lifted it up to the rafters & hung it there & drove out it will be easy to get back on The battery is only tempory it used to be under pass seat Ill be makeing a battery box to hold 3 to put where standard ones go The gutters were scraped & wire brushed until shiney & the black is rust converter I have to do a few repairs before painting I will post more picks as I go Cheers Reid

Thanks for the info Reid, sounds like you got the pop top removal sorted out, if I ever take mine off I would need at least four people to lift it clear off the van, my pop top is solid i.e. fold up wooden panels as opposed to canvas, are you going to simply paint the gutters or is there a method of treating them to make them more waterproof and longer lasting? by the way did yours come with cabinets fitted in the back doors? mine have factory fitted and they are real handy for storage of bits and pieces and doesn't mean you have to go into the van to find that cake of soap or roll of rse wipe when out camping, I should post some pics as I removed one of the rear door cabinets and replaced it with a panel and speaker box, prob is its raining at the mo. I am most interested in the window removal and reinstalling, how did you seal the windows? are they rubber seals or like mine aluminium framed? also can you share some llight on how you panelled the opening after removal of the windows, I will try to get some pics of what I've been up to but today I am going to a rugby tournament and tommorrow I have to work all day and then theres the league grand final tommorrow arvo, so may not be able to post pics this weekend but will try, regards, Eddy MAC

Hi Eddy posted some more picks in my gallery some of the pop top & some of the window's & panels I used Fullers colour caulk to re install the window & panel dont forget the stiffining rib it takes all the drum out of it I dont know what Im going to do with the gutters yet there are a couple of thickness of steel & is a bit rough to just paint I wiped a small smear of bog in the gutters of my coaster & sanded it smooth then painted & that worked fine if you use any rubbery caulking compound you cant sand it smooth No there were no cupboards on the rear doors but there seems to be enough room in them to do something As you can see in the photos the windows are aluminium & screw into a timber frame inside & the panels are pop rivited in I would like to see more picks of inside fitouts of all the campers to get some more ideah's & also how that pop top of your's works Cheers Reid

Hey Hotrod thanks for the rap Ill be even happier when the interior is finished The rubbers I got from Spectrum Rubber [they heve a website] I emailed them & ordered a complete set to suit a SWB Beddie & got 3 rolls of different sizes took a bit of working out but got there in the end They are not moulded in the corners you have to cut them at 45 & glue them Makeing the holes for the clips is the hardest but they turned out fine They cost me $340 The rubbers for the poptop are off the shelf at clark rubber Just take in an old piece & match it up You could probably do that for the door rubbers anyway They cost about $12.50 a meter Any more questions just ask

Me thinks your on to me Warren The ply is too hard to bend in 2 directions in the back corner so I put the flat panel out from the window the hole is for a speaker & tv under to watch from bed the bottem part had to go full length for the matress & feet Bed is about 6ft long The curved panel on the inside back is the side wall of the shower toilet cubicle The other side bed will be the same There will be 500mm between beds at the base & widen up as it goes to the poptop opening The back will be set back to put chairs & table for outside & there will be a door on the front All this is in my head so no plans or sketches I just drew it out on the floor Moore later as I put it togeather Cheers Reid

2 x 1 pine framing is good for fixing ply panels to, I used metal partition studs on the side walls was dead set easy fix to the van ribs with the added bonus of being strong and light. I used metal low profile furring channel on the roof and again proved to be strong and light, only disadvantage is that you can't secret nail and all fixing must be scewed

Hi Reid, I like your fridge and microwave, come up good, I am doing something simular. What I have been concerned about is air and heat behind the cabinets if I close them in. Do you have any pics of your vents/fan set up that might help me with my final design. I am only having a small fridge / freezer, just for day trips to shows. Because mine is a show van, not a camper I have'nt decided if I will have mine disappear or not.
George...................... ???
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on February 15, 2010, 04:06:36 PM
Hi George go back to page 7 photo 21 That's the fridge cupboard with Dynamat on the outside wall Zoom in & you will see vents at the top & a small fan in the bottom shelf that drawers air from under the drawer These small fridges dont make all that much heat but need a vent to outside so Idont know how you'l get around that for a show van but there's always a way Cheers Reid
Title: Re: Camper Update

Could you perhaps run the vent hose so it exits through the floor of the van instead of the side? You won't see it then.
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on February 16, 2010, 06:50:48 AM
The problem is hot air rises You would have to box it all in & have a large fan to force the hot air down Cheers Reid
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: Rogue Trooper on February 16, 2010, 08:08:55 AM
If you used your install as an example you could reverse the setup perhaps. A small intake at the top of the unit to draw air in and at the bottom an in-line centfigugal fan to draw the air out. Warm air rises sure but if the air isn't all that hot as you say it shouldn't take much effort to draw it down and out instead. You could even vent it into the van. It's not like air that comes off an engine full of fumes etc.
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: Bedfordcrazy on February 16, 2010, 09:58:36 AM
Hi Guys, appreciate the advice, you hit the mark on one thing, because mine is a show van, I dont want the louvard vent on the outside of body. whats your opininon on this idea. I was thinking of having a vent in the floor behind fridge in cabinet, then to give the van that show look putting in a fake brake cooling vent, that is routed to the enclosure behind the fridge, that way Cool air would be forced in and out through the floor vent. My big Q. here though is in wet weather, would water get forced into the enclosure, how do these vents work ?
George..........................Here is a pic I got from the web, could I do something like this, connect a flexi pipe back into fridge enclosure, but the water, how do I stop that ending up in side ???  ;D
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: Rogue Trooper on February 16, 2010, 10:24:37 AM
If it's only for ventilation why not draw the air from inside the van? Cold air intake for the engine sure but is it really necessary just to provide a little airflow for the back of a fridge? Bit overkill I think.
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: MaTTe on February 16, 2010, 10:55:01 PM
as rogue has said, i think a cold air ram is probably overkill
Air from inside the van will probably be fine, it's more if you're spending extended time in the van, you want the vents to keep the air inside fresh when all windows are up.

I'd be bringing the air in through the floor. you'd want 2 holes, one for air in, and one for air out. have a baffle on the bottom so no water/dirt/bugs are scooped up as you travel, and have the entry air and exit air holes facing toward the rear of the van for the same water/bug/dirt reasons.
you have one pipe basically the thickness of the floor or maybe 10mm higher than the floor level, this is not important in terms of thickness as it's the air in.
For the exit air, you want a pipe running from below the floor up toward the top of the cavity behind the fridge. You'll want a computer fan or something similar that'll flow a decent amount of air without requiring alot of energy.

By using the setup this way, the air is drawn in by the flow of the exit fan, it will distribute throughout the cavity however it wishes as it is so low and the suction is drawn from such a high point in relation to the entry.
The hot air will be drawn out as it will have risen to the top.

With the baffle on the underside of the floor of the van, you'd really want the two holes/pipes side by side, it'll be easier to make the baffles, you'll want probably 100mm of depth in the baffle to prevent anything being drawn in, and you'll want the two pipes to be seperated so the hot air isn't drawn back into the inlet.

I could draw something up for you, but im sure you can figure it out..

I hope this helps.

Hey Reid

How have you got the battery system set up?

Are you running dual batteries?

Are you charging both from the altenator?

If the charger is an older type it may over charge your batteries.

Have a look at These (http://www.batteriesdirect.com.au/shop/search/499/ctek.html)

The charger should be at least 10% of the Ahr of your combined batteries

hey resto, i have a ctek charger connected for my landcruiser, and swear by them, they are light weight, fit in the palm of your hand, and never overcharge you batteries, about $130, for the one i got, but will be getting a second one for van, and one for the bobcat, when the cat one needs to be replaced. They are halve the price of other chargers, there is no weight in them, all circuit boards. I have mine mounted to the wall beside the cruiser, when i park it i just connect up and forget.

Reid

I recently puchased a Haigh MCU Battery Charger - 12V (3600mA) (http://www.haigh.com.au/index.php?option=showcategory&CategoryID=5) and it works a treat, charged my Campers battery and it has been staring so much easier ever since.

So much so that I charged every battery I had :D

But wouldnt you know it I went back to Auto Barn where I bought it from and it was on sale $30 cheaper.

I'm currently putting together a camper trailer and I have 3x30 Ahr deep cycle batteries that I intend to run stuff off, led lights, water pump, sterio etc, I like the MCU Battery Charger - 12V (7000mA)
(ftp://http://www.haigh.com.au/index.php?option=showcategory&CategoryID=5) for this as it can also be used as a 5 amp power supply and it's $50 cheaper at the moment .

The only draw back I see at the moment is that when you turn them on the come up in a default (not doing anything) mode and you have to select what mode you want to use, but that is just a matter of pressing a button.

Also worth noting the lower Amperage rating of the charger, the slower it is to recharge the battery to a float condition, my Camper battery was pretty flat and took over 16 hours to fully charge.

Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: Warren on January 24, 2011, 09:13:42 PM
Ive seen this happen before - don't know what the issue is though.

Reid have you thought of drilling some holes in the tubes so that you can weld directly to the plug.

Also you dont seem to have much gap to allow for weld penetration.

Not being critical  - Just asking.

Warren
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on January 25, 2011, 05:57:51 AM
Yes Warren the tubes will be spotted in 3 places then veed out down to the plug between the spots then fulley welded dont think it will break I dont think the old diff had a plug in it at all as the 2 tubes were a diff size just butted & its ok Thanks for the input Cheers Reid

Looking good Reid.

What sort of dollas did the diff end up costing you?

If its cheap enough it could be a better alternative to 9inch diffs

Warren
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on January 28, 2011, 02:49:40 PM
Long story Warren I got the VN diff off my brother inlaw he's doing up a VH commie & has stuff laying around everywhere it was complete except for axels which he used in another project got diff for nothing you should get one from wreckers for about $ 100 - 150 Then I had to buy 2 long axels cost me 30 bucks each but prob should have been $50 each Then you need about 6 inches off the end off another diff Holden are good as there all the same diametr & the same bolt patern on the end A 6inch piece of heavy gauge tubing that fits inside axel tubes you will have to machine it to fit tight inside cost me 10 bucks All the welding cost me the price off a packet off rods 10 bucks Its handy haveing a b inlaw thats a boiler maker welder with a laith I only need a new brake hose made up & the brake line replaised on the side we lengthend of course we pinched the spring pads & shocko brackets off the old diff SoWarren it cost me about 100 bucks & it has 28 spline axels same as 9inch so is plenty strong enough The finished length is 1670 still 60mm short of the bedford diff but you can make that up with wider wheels I dont think ive missed anylhing but just ask if you think of anything Cheers Reid
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: BusyKiwi on January 28, 2011, 05:27:08 PM
useless info: vn axles are same spline as bedford, just the (bedford) spline is about .5mm fatter
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: Warren on January 29, 2011, 12:32:00 AM
Thanks Reid

So you could buy two diffs, put it to gether and still be cheaper than a 9inch.

Mmmmmmm

Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on January 29, 2011, 06:42:28 AM
That would be the way to do it You would have the extra long axel & tube end & if you were lucky enough to find one with a 3.45 ratio that would be even better
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: BusyKiwi on January 29, 2011, 07:16:29 AM
With my standard CF, is running 3.8 commodore engine and I used the commodore diff centre, is 3.08 ratio, commodores came out with 15's but I'm only running 14's (70 series tyres) I can still cruise at 100k under 2000rpm, coasting on the flats is about 1750 rpm

Hi guys I would like some help from those that have fitted disc brakes & kept the original bedford master cylinder Is there non return valves in the master cylinder to hold pressure in the line for drum brakes & did you remove them for the discs Im going to leave the beddie one on for now but will change to xb falcon later Any info would be greatfully receved Cheers Reid

I fitted discs to my last Cf and used the original master cylinder.
Had no problems at all, although I *think* the disc brake model ( CF2 ) has something extra fitted to the system.

i drove around with disc brakes for some time with orig master.. not advised thou. front brakes were sqeeking cause of the line presure and the proportion is wrong between front and back.

strange how everyones van is different

when I put the v6 and hq disc brakes in my standard van I kept the cf booster but found it didnt pull up very well so put the vn commodore booster in. works pretty good but i can't lock the brakes up if i jump on them.

Joel was running the standard cf booster with the original cf disc brakes, he reckoned it was good and he's running the v8

anything with a 1 inch bore..

the ford xb eara master seems to be the easiest conversion also size wise its about the same as orig so wont hit bonnet like others..

sorry restoreid never pulled one apart. when they stuff up i chuck another one on.. same with ball joints when the stuff u i grab another wishbone with good ball joint in it and throw it in.. much quicker for me.

HAha Ben it's handy when you have all them extra parts laying around This ones still good no leaks so ill check it out today & find out for myself I dont want the discs draging the old 202 hasent got that much power

i would advise anyone with a bedford to buy a spare van for parts.. parts are just to hard to come by. even if you wreck it out so you dont have the shell laying around.

chris ryan will be able to drive bedfords for the rest of his life and his kids lifes cause he has that many parts! i wanna be driving bedfords for ever also thats why i think its worth investing in wreck vans..

Hi guys Here is a photo off finished front discs conversion all that's needed is a 2inch dust cap or ill have to make an adaptor to fit a holden one Other photo for those that are interested is the non return valve in standard bedford master cylinder which I belive has to be removed when discs are installed Cheers Reid

Well guy's finally got it going & took it for a lap on thursday arvo Left the nonreturn valves out Not happy the pedal nearly went to the floor before brakes started to work so back up on jack stands all wheels off & had a head scratch what to do so I put the nonreturn valves back in they are plastic spring loaded & have a small bleed hole in the centre Gave  the whole system a good pleed Wife came in handy there got a fair bit of air out Put wheels back on & went for another lap FANTASTIC best thing ive done to it sofar Just have to find some 2inch dust caps & job finished By the way the front track 'center of tyre to center of tyre only increased by 5mm at 1670 mm over standard bedford real happy with that steering will be NO heavier Anyway enough for now Cheers Reid

Well took the camper out for a good run today Man what a difference the brakes are excellent getting better as the pads bed in I was worried that the 3.08 diff was going to be too high but it is perfect will cruse at 100ks easy at 2800rpm & still got plenty of pickup left Its much quieter inside without the old noisy diff & it uses 2nd gear more which is good before it hardley used 2nd would go streight to top with the old 3.70 diff With all the new suspension parts & neww shocks it's gone from a shitbox to a LIMO & im as happy as a pig in shit Cheers Reid

Went for a nice long drive into Port Macquarie today camper went great smooth as & the brakes work fantastic it's a totally different thing to drive still got a few rattles to chase down but not too bad John you hit the nail on the head Finding someone to do the job is the problem there are shops in the cities that spcalise in these conversions but they charge a leg & arm & the smaller shops dont want to know about it & private blokes are a bit wairy about doing conversions like this for other people that's why I did it myself My brother in law lives next door he is a certified welder & has a smell laith so between us we had the gear to do the job Only had to farm out the machining of the outside bearing as his laith was too small to hold the hub without it jumping out & that cost me $50 It seams the Hopper stopper BA falcon kit would be the best & I think it's about $2500 & I think a diff would cost about $1500 you supply the diff I couldnt find anybody around here that was interested in doing the job & my b inlaw had done quite a few diffs for himself so it was easy & I nutted out the front brakes myself & got him to do most of the machining on the hubs & the rest was easy That's why I put so many picks up so others could see how I done it & maby they could find somewone to help with welding & machining Anything else you would like to know just ask & ill help if I can Cheers Reid

Well last week didnt go too good the misus complaind about fumes in the van when we were doin over 100ks so took the engine cover off to check it out with the leedlight in a certan position you could see fumes comeing from the exaust side off engine got under with light & exaust fumes comeing from stuffed gasget between exaust manifold & engine pipe Got the tools out to undo the 2 nuts on exaust manifold & you guest it snapped the studs off OK looks like a good time to install extractors & complete new system As with everything nothing fits so had to modify the colector on bottom of extractors to go up & over gearbox xmember Got that done today Now have to make the heat xchanger in the exaust pipe Also found the stock inlet manifold wont fit over extractors the water box under carb fouls one pipe so wil delete it bye cutting a piece out also going to fit a webber carbie off a falcon it is a progressive linkage one will have to modify where it bolts on & keep it in closer to the motor so I dont have to modify the engine cover Will take picks later in the week still plenty to doo Cheers Reid

Well guys been haveing trouble with the old 202 it developed a rattle in the top end that's why ive been researching alternative motors so I thought Id better check it out Took the rocker cover off & it's not getting any oil up the top so I thought no oil pressure so we hooked up a good pressure gauge & it read 45 lbs which is about standard so that wasnt the prob so off with the sideplates & out with the cam followers some were pitted bad & all were cloged up with gunk & old oil so off to my friendly Bursons to price a new set $60 cheep I thought so grabbed a set wacked them in & washed out the pushrods put it all back togeather Now getting plenty oil up the top no rattles & hopefully dont need an engine rebuild which I was quoted about $2000.00 Have to get it into town for a pink slip now then finde some dosh for rego All for now let you's know how i go Cheers Reid

Now a tricky one for all beddiefiles out there I found this plate under the rear passenger wheel well pop riverted to the inside of the wheel tub The letters & numbers are welded with a stick welder ( thought it might have something to do with it being a camper but Im not sure Have a look under yours & see if there is one  Any Idears come on Ben youve pulled a few apart I bet I get a few weird surgestions HaHa
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: JOE RYAN on December 09, 2011, 05:24:31 PM
I have a similar plate on my 76 camper that has been welded over the original chassie number on the passenger side firewall, when I asked Qld Transport about it they advised that the stamped original number was difficult to read as the numbers were not stamped in very deep and there was some discussion if a digit was a C or O. So as a solution the Qld Transport issued a new number on a steel plate that they supplied and the owner had to weld on but my number is stamped into the plate not welded like yours.

Cheers

Joe

if the rego branch don't reconise the chassis number, they will allocate one to the van, car or bike. A lot were done with a stick, straight to the chassis. Then in their superior wisdome, thet would let you fix it by poprivets, self tappets etc. Or it could just be the number for the camper alone

Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: Rogue Trooper on January 11, 2012, 04:54:45 AM
That's pretty tricky utilising the heat from the exhaust system like that. I'm just trying to keep as much heat in the pipes as possible and to stop it radiating out as due to the mid-mount location of the engine in mine I have a bit of a heat trap under the engine cover and the air intake is going to run just a bit too close to the exhaust for my liking. Going to heat wrap the pipes and I think I'll be implementing some kind of heatshielding for the intake as well.

Havent tested it properly yet but went for a run to town today to do some shoping & had about 50ltrs in the tank it's about 15 to 20 minutes to town & drove around for about30 minutes then went shoping & got caught up with someone wanting to know all about it then another 20 to get home had some lunch then went & checked the temp it was cold at first but warmed up good enough to shower with not hot just warm pretty good I thought Im sure it would get hotter on a longer drive so it works YIPPIE

The long 3x2 clamped to block is to counter balance engine as lift point is about center of front cylinder then you can move it closer to center of engine once you lift it foward a bit Supported the gearbox with ratchet strapp while the motor is out

brilliant idea restoreid
that looks a better idea than lifting the body off the front chassis.
cool idea with the length of wood as a leverage assistant.

A bit of usless info for thoes still with the holden 6 in Check that someone hasent used the bottom of the sump to jack up the van If it's dinted its probably hard up against the oil pickup if it is there isnt much gap left for the oil to get through & you mite not be getting enough volume of oil through I think that's what was wrong with mine Cheers Reid

Well guys had a good day today got the big bit in the engine bay All went smoothly As you can see from the 1st photo my helper Vessa Block is down the 3x2 half way as the lift point is above No2 cylinder I get it in as far as I can then set it down on blocks of wood & move the lift point to above No1 cylinder & have to move my helper right out to the end fo the 3x2 & employ another helper Tiney Anville to counter balence It all went great & I didnt have to share my beer with the help

Well guys got a bit more done this week Got my brandnew gear reduction starter motor $150

Reid,

Where did you get the starter motor? Do you have a part number or something that I can use to track one down?
I know it gets HOT under the engine cover and I know the starter motors fatigue because they sit so close to the extractors. Once I get my gear reduction starter motor and install it I am going to make a heat shield to protect it from the heat coming off the extractors.

Cheers

Jock
Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on April 22, 2012, 06:08:51 PM
I dont think you will have heat problems with a reduction starter they are way smaller than the original & have plenty off clearance around the extractors I dont have the part No at hand I just went to my local auto electrition & got one to suit a VH commodor off the shelf Works perfect

yeah i have 2 x 90w on my camper running into a 180ah gell cell to run a normal 230v fridge freezer (only use a 800w inverter)
also put on a dual battery auto charging switch from truck ault as well. it means i can be off grid for days/weeks at a time.

So a dual battery charging isolator isnt needed With this system?

Title: Re: Camper Update
Post by: restoreid on August 20, 2015, 03:55:30 PM
I think that is for the house batteries If you have 3 batteries like I have I have an isolater for the start batterie so that it doesn,t go flat when the fridge is going & then wen on charge the start batt charges first then the isolater switches over & charges the house batteries
Title: Re: Camper Update

Well guys & girls the time has come that I have to get serious about selling my camper For those that have been BUGA members for a few years probably know as much about it as I doo & for those that are newbies it is all here in Camper Updates If anyone is interested can PM me I will be offering it in other places but the BUGA people have first go The asking price is $15.000 but I will listen to all offers that are close That price is no where near what I have spent on it over the 7 years I have been working on it NOT including labour You will NOT build one as good for less & it has everything done & is fully registered in NSW so lets see what you got Cheers Reid
