Title: problem engine
Post by: ben on June 01, 2012, 10:15:49 AM
so heres the delima

500kms ago rattle started developing from engine, only occured when under load.

it has since turned into a bad knocking type rattle, still only pronounced under load but its always there now load or not load so its got progressivly worse.

im grounded at chris ryans at the moment so we have few spare parts on hand which is handy.

heres what ive done to try and fix her to date..

-ive pulled the harmonic balancer off and replaced it. not that.

- pulled the timing cover off and checked out cam gear - nope its a fresh new alliminum one.

- pulled the rocker cover off to see if anythings out of order. well cant see anthing not moving right

it sounds like its coming from the bottom of the engine. doesnt sound like bearing noise altou i guess it could be. chris thinks its not bearings cause the noise doesnt sound metalic.

anyone got any suggestions?

cheers
ben

there,s a little man in there with a little hammer trying to get out.
in other words sounds like your just about to drop a big end =they usually come out the side.
drop the sump ant try tightning the bigend cap,
if that dont work change the bigend bearing.

thats if its a bigend witch id nearly bet my fav things.

it sounds like a gudgeon pin or cracked piston to me maybe even a skirk missing off a piston in any case it sounds terminal no amount of bandaids will fix it .its engine swap time.btw :you can test it by pulling off the plug leads one at a time till the knock stops, turn engine off pull one lead off start up if noise still the same turn off replace lead then repeat on next lead till the noise changes/stops .dont try pulling the leads with the motor running unless you want an afro and to fart sparks ;D ;D if you do ,remember photo's lloottss of photo's    Cheers merlin

Sounds like a bearing

Get a big screw driver, place it on the block and the handle to your ear - with engine running, move the screw driver around until you can spot the location, if it is a bearing you'll hear it faintly just under idle.

Just becareful you don't short out the starter or screw driver, any clothing, hair etc doesn't get in the fan

One from left field and my past. Is it a manual? I had a pressure plate bolt work its way lose and it was hitting/skimming the bellhousing. Sounded like a bearing. Go louder as i revved more. opened the inspection cover and found aluminum shavings.Jackpot!!!!
