Hi i have just bought my first Bedford, a 1978 Cf SWB. Can anyone tell me if it is legal to put in a 308, aor a v6 into the bedford? i live in Newcastle NSW.

Gettin harder all the time For mine I think it's a waist of time & money Id just do a 202 & hang a turbo on it & spend the money on paint & panel work & do up the inside Just my 2bobs worth

ahh the fun begins eh Matty...i guess u can do a V8 or V6 conversion..if u got the $$ or know how and find a nice friendly engineer.... ;)

Matty,
You can fit a 304/308 as long as it complies. You will have to have an engineers cert (approx$1200).
Also you need the following:
Two speed wipers
Collapsible steering column
Depending on engine, unleaded fuel filler pipe and anti pollution gear
Windscreen demister to be fitted

The bedford has a collapsible steering column.
A collapsible column is defined as having a knuckle/joint which will sheer on impact. The bedford has one between steering column and steering rack, As well as the rubber joint
A non collapsible column would be one where the column goes directly to the steering box (usually pre 60's)
Also if you register the van as a CF 350 instead of a CF 230 the engine size allowed would be greater.
The 350 models are usually lwb vans but some swb base vans did come out as 350 models, they have a greater tare weight

Finding an Engineer is a task.

Thanks for the advice, keeping the 202 and spending the money on panel and paint is a good idea, i am kean to fit rear seats for the kids. I think i can get it approved through the 4WD places ?.
-
Id get it regoed in standard form first then put your extra seats in after who would know

The first cop that pulled you over.
When fitting extra seats, it's easiest to get rear seats from a late model van or similar. Make sure you get ALL mounting plates/assemblies.
Install it the same way as in the original donor vehicle. The extra seating capacity will be a lot more likely to be approved.
-
Arn't you meant to have a opening window with the extra seats?
-
yeah last i heard you needed an opening window with rear seats

The first cop that pulled you over.
ive had half a dozen cops pull me over with un enginered seat.. all they cared about was seat belts. nsw too.. cops dont know much at all about bedfords. i had one cop ask me for an engineeres cert for my holden 6 engine???
-
You must get pulled over alot Ben, Do you drive like a hoon? :o
-
Hatchback Toranas only have a vent window in the back
-
Arn't you meant to have a opening window with the extra seats?
I hope not, there are a lot of late model 2 door hatch cars that only have front wind down windows and no opening rear windows.

Over the weekend i striped the front end out of my CF. I have a few questions, firstly can you buy a full front suspension kit to rebuild the front end (eg bushes, ball joints etc, etc) if there is no kit available where is the best place to buy bedford bits.
Thanks Matt
