Title: Backdoor Mod
Post by: Bryce on January 28, 2012, 11:47:02 AM
I want to customize the back door but I don't know which idea I like better, I know that the one piece door will be a lot easier to make, but I though I'd get you more experienced guys opinion on which looks better and how much of a shit fight it will be.

As you say the one-piece is easier but it is also more practical. You'll have to have some pretty strong supports to be able to rest stuff on the bottom section if you went to a two-piece. Even people just clambering in and out will put a lot of stress on the supports and hinges which may also require extra bracing for the door frame. I'd stick with the one-piece.

I like the two peice, if you have a bed up back, it can be used as a boot under one half and some were to sit when needed. And yes it is more work, done it to one in the 80's. Ben has fiberglass one piece ones

Lol mty good call I thought it was a panel van forst glance. Two piece looks good but if you use ur van every day and plan to throw crap in the back get a fibre glass one piece door from Ben. They work don't leak and look mint

like everyone has said, it all depends on what you want to use/ put in the rear.
Me personally, I deleted the rear doors completely as when finished there will be a bed in there with an arch as access from inside only.

Yep "Horses for coarses"

Depends on what you plan for the van, but I would never "close off" the back of a van - limits the access and uses.

I have a skin for a single rear door, and seing how some have hinged them for swinging up - well I dont like it, so I plan to use the dirver side hinges and have it swing out normally.

If I was going to make it like a van, tailgate and window (second pic) I would run the join up at the fold in the body line rather than half way down just seems neater to me.

One piece with top hinges gives you an awning of sorts for sun or rain.

I wasn't a fan of a one piece rear door but after owning a Suzuki Carry Van I now reckon they are the go. The door is out of the way when loading stuff and gives me a spot to stand out of the rain.
