Title: Starter Solenoid cuts out
Post by: Big Camper on September 19, 2011, 06:46:45 PM
Hey guy's I'm a bit stuffed here and would value some help PLEASE

Just put my dash back in and went to start my 76 Beddy.  It started OK, but the starter kept cranking over, so I disconnected the ignition ASAP, which stopped the engine.  Now however, the starter solenoid turns on (engages) and immediately turns off, then repeats, extremely rapidly.  I thought this could be faulty wiring to the relay, so I bypassed the ignition wiring, going straight from the battery to the relay, same results.  I switched the relay, in case this was faulty, same results.
Has anybody had this before?  I'd just like to know if it is the solenoid, starter or wiring somewhere else :-\

Thanks

First fully charge your battery and then try it again.

Do you have a spare starter motor.

If you do swap it out because it sounds like your starter solenoid contacts are warn out.

If you dont have a spare starter, your best bet is to make up a wire with a push button switch on it, so you can crank the starter while holding the button only.
Hardwire it to the battery then have it go to the starter on the other side of the switch.
If you're having the same problem, then you've removed the potential for the issue to be dash wiring related.
If it is starter you have 2 options, get yours rebuild for a small fee, or get a gear reduction starter which is usually the better option

Cheers,
Matte

minght also be a good idea to check all battery cable connections, battery positive, battery earth strap, motor earth strap and battery positive at starter motor. Just in case as a bad connection on any of these can cause chattering of the starter.

Cheers Jeff

Thanks for all the great help guy's.  Will let you know how it goes.  And thanks Ben  :) I think I might replace the starter BEFORE the engine LOL

Promised I'd post the solution.  It is really boring, it was the starter motor/solenoid, replaced with a new one (from Nationwide Auto Parts - wouldn't mention but they were cheap, quick, no problems) and problem is solved.  Should also meantion that some of the wiring got hot enough to burn the insulation, so this also needs replacing  :-[
Again thanks for all the help
