Hi all, what was once an oil weep a few drops now and then has become a leak.
The oil leaks from above the front bolt under the balancer Is it possible to unbolt the
axle and steering and lower it enough to get the sump off without any dramas.
Has anyone done this before if so any info will be greatful . I need to get this done
for my roadworthy..
So close yet so so far again.... Many thanx Frank

from memory the sump gasket comes in sections, 2 cork ones and two rubber ones. and to replace them you need some room.
Now normally the engin in a beddy sits about 100mm above the cross member, you could gain more space by removing the engine mount bolts and lifting the motor up from inside the cabin
a small gantry could be made out of 2x4 timber and some allthread could be used as a winch.
I will see if I can find some pics of what i mean

That will be great Warren,
I tried the old silcone over it quick fix to no avail.
In hindsight that was no way to treat my Beddy and she let me know.
I do have the gaskets now the hard work will soon begin for just 1 bolt.
Thanx Frank

Hi Frank....I have taken my sump out of my beddie with the engine in. I made up a gantry like in the pic but had a bugger of a time to get it out.Had to lift it off the mounts and raise it hard up under the floor. Also had to unbolt the oil pickup from inside to get the sump off. The bottom pic is how much clearance i had to start with. ;D ;)

I replaced my sump gasket without raising the motor , I just dropped the sump and pushed it to one side and then the other this gave me access to the bottom of the block that the sump joined to . I removed old gasket with scrapers etc, cleaned all surfaces refitted new gasket with a generous application of ultra grey gasket joint compound and bolted the sump back on.
That was about 4 years ago no leaks since, the most difficult part to reach and clean was at the rear up against gearbox cover plate but not to bad.

Sounds like Joe knows ALL about it :)
I couldn't find any pictures of the small gantry but it is the same in principal as Johno's one only smaller and fits inside the cabin.
I'd try Joes way first and if thats to hard then look at getting some timber, chain, nuts, washers and all thread to make a mini gantry - sort of like a carpenters tresile.

THanks for the info i will try Joes method first.
Looks like a dirty weekend for me. I will post photos if succesful.
Many thanx Frank

the leak could also be coming from the harmonic balancer.. just thought id throw it out there just in case??
-
Are there any tell tale signs it can be the harmonic balancer
Or is just a mystery until its pulled off.
Anyway a little more info
engine is a 186
The oil was weeping from the rubber gasket above the r/h side.
And a little weep would apear around the bolt.
Silicone was placed on the bolt and it stopped any sign of oil for about 3 weeks.
We re siliconed it but this time it had no effect making it worse.
I had a good look around the balancer and could not see any oil.
Does this diagnosis still mean it the harmonic balancer could be at fault.
Thank you Frank

Have you checked that all of the bolts that hold the sump on are tight, not too tight as you can easily snap them off.

My friends dad Clffy whos an old old skool retired mechanic.
Has drilled into me to not over tighten bolts in certain areas.
Im a novice mechanic and leave all the finer ares to Cliffy even the tightening of a bolt.
Well until i get confident enough to do. Am learning slowly.
Cliify checked the bolts and they seem fine. The one he pulled wasnt snapped.
His theory is that the rubber gasket might have a tear or something ???
-
hey mate, Clify is absolutely right.. if you tighten a sump bolt to the point of snapping the bolt, you have gone WWWAAAAYYYY too far..
With sump and rocker bolts with new gaskets, we put gasket cement on one side of the gasket, then always tighten them so they grip but are loose. Let the cement set and the gasket to settle, then tighten them up the next day
you shouldnt need much torque at all to squash a gasket, feel the thread when you tighten it, when the resistance starts to take up stop tightening.. its easier to give it a bit more if it leaks, than it is to have to put on another gasket because you over tightened it.
Show us some photos of the leaks.
Quite often the leak will be under the timing cover, around the rear main, or thru one of the bolts, silicon on the bolt is usually a good fix, tho some silicons are better than others.. sikaflex obviously being the best.
One thing to check is that the sump isnt actually cracked around the bolts due to someone overtightening in the past. hairline fractures will leak, though you wont see them unless the sump is off..
Hope this helps

Sure it's not the harmonic ballencer seal?
-
For the sake of getting lucky, Cliffy cleaned up my poor silicone effort, cleaned it up and used permatex gasket maker after i used the wrong type . Couldnt find the sikaflex Matte mentioned .Where would you buy it ?..
Oh well after let it sit for 24 hours , took the Beddy for a test dive, what seemed a miracle was not with a little oil weeping out.
Your right about the balancer, Cliffy is going to check up on it aswell.
I will try and post some photos , camera on phone having dramas..
Thanks Frank

On closer examination the drip was located coming from under the harmonic balancer.
Dont know how l missed it , ( FOOL )
Cliffy remembered in his day of pulling Holdens apart that is a special Holden Red Harmonic balancer puller tool.
I rang around today and so far only Repco stock em, out of stock the moment, $50
Does anyone know of any other place that sells them hopefully cheaper,
Thanx Frank

Supercheap sell a universal puller for about $30. I bought one 20 years ago and still using it but only for light jobs, I have used it to remove my Harmonic balancer

Hey mate, sikaflex is stocked at the hardware stores, however permatex and loctite branded products are very good too, and easier to apply as they aren't quite as 'sticky' when applying.
As Joe said, most auto shops should stock universal puller sets, you'll want 5/16 fine thread bolts to fit the harmonic balancer if the kit doesnt come with them supplied.
You'll also want some big sockets to belt the harmonic balancer back on, i cant remember the size we normally use but it'd be a 1&3/4 or something like that
Good luck

Thanx alot for all the help and imformation.
Just got home from aka500 alexs home from buying a beddy heater .Just meeting other Bedford people is always quite a pleasure.
As i found out first hand when my partner and l joined the earlier Bedford meet in Melbourne this year.
