Gday All
what needs to be done to turn a dual wheel LWB into a single wheel unit and what is the differance in handleing.
is there a weight issue due to length of van or is it if it was to be used as work horse, I intend to use only as sleeping accom on road without all mod cons. cheers Bazz

Ok, I am doing this, so will post all the details soon, but to answer your question in breif, know it is not a straight swap, some welding needed, but is a easy job.......

I did some research when putting some fat wheels on my swb, and I remember reading, if you want to swap duals for singles, the singles have to be as wide as the combined duals. My interpretation of this is if you had dual 195's then you'd need 395 wide singles, which is huge. Kind of unrelated, but I've seen a lwb hiace getting around, with dual setup, but he's taken the easy option of just removing the inner wheels, and running the outsides only. Can't tell from the side, but very obvious when driving behind him

it can be done....however....you will need to get the van re-weighed as the load limit will be less that you can legally carry on singles....i had a LWB many years ago that was unlicensed when i bought it. It had singles with a 9 inch diff conversion....all i had to do was put it over a weigh bridge to get it re classified [Gross, Tare and aggregate]

Ok our rules are different here, when I swap diff with a single wheel from a bedford I can take it straight over the pit and get WOF without a problem. Our paper work does not state it is a duel wheel model etc, But put all that a side, our guys at the testing station are already confused when a Bedford turns up for a check let alone know if any changes have been made form one Bedford diff to another Bedford diff. ;)

Depending on what diff you use
you would need to
-re weld n reposition your shock absorber mounts on the chassis rail
--change ,cut and balance tailshaft
-get 10" deep dish wheels
-cut and re weld the diff mounts (for over or under leaf spring set up)

Don't need to touch the Chassis rail, all work done on the diff........ I do not have to cut tail shaft

Lucky you!!
I had a Holden 3 speed/
swapped it for a Holden 4 speed.-same length- no need to cut tailshaft
- put in a Celica 5 Speed- box is 40 mm shorter and lower..so had to cut n rebalance tailshaft
i have had many different diffs in my vans..some had 2 sets of shock mounts..BOTH in/ and out side of Chassis Rail

Yes this is ture, going from the single wheel diff to the duel wheel is a problem because the duel diiff is a lot shorter, mounts for the shocks have to be changed on the chassis rail, but from duel to single is easy mounts can stay on the inside and remount on diff.

i have made swb guards out of fibreglass which can be moulded into the lwb to create a standard swb guard.. would enable you to swap to single without monster truck tyres.. ben if you want more info better pm me. im super busy right now..
