G'Day Guys I have allredy done a VU commodore rack conversion on my Jag/Bedford front end You need to fit a bevel drive out of a jap van as the rack steers oposite when mounted on the front of crossmember there are some picks on the old buga site if you want a looksee cheers Neil ;D

G'day
Looking at the photo, the rack looks way too narrow.
I reckon bump steer would be a real problem.

yeh it does look really narrow huh.. but if you extend the arms no reason why you ouldnt get the same turing circle as a commadore yeh?

G'day

It still looks way too narrow.
To understand why I am concerned check out this article (with diagram):
http://www.longacreracing.com/articles/art.asp?ARTID=13#Q6

I have an early Ford van that when going had a hot Holden 186 and powerglide auto. It has bump steer. It was scary at slow speed and lethal at a fun speed. It has been relegated to the graveyard.

oh that makes sense. so would it be safe to say that the orig bedford front end setup has bump steer being quite a problem?

or possibly its cause all the bedfords i driv have sagged front springs and that is causeing it?

Mark and I sorted out the length problem by extending the rack shaft and slider on the passenger side and offset the rack to the drivers side making it slightly longer than the Bedford rack and mounted it slightly higher thus all but eliminating bump steer in a lowered front end I can supply the specs if anybody interested.By the way I have finally started on my full floating chassis for my shorty will post pics as i go            Cheers Neil

The VK rack can be used but the VU one is longer we have a front mounted rack out of a jap van in Marks van so you dont need a bevel box to redirect the steering input the Commy ones need it but thats ok to me because it relocates the collumn higher on the firewall giving more foot room and a better driving position . I can put kits together if enough interest .but I will post some pics and info as soon as I can

Merlin now your talking mate, perfect idea, when can you have some ready to fit kits made as i for one will have one & im sure youll have orders in advance, so if your for real so am i, i for one need this power steering due to my small stature & strength so im keen as mustard buddy.

Merlin

When you get around to taking photos could you (please) take pic's of both setups, the commadore and the Jap Van one as well, with as much info as possible.

I like the idea that the bevel box means mounting the collumn up higher, all those V8s with little leg room could use it.

Thanks in advance

Warren

Hi Toolking.

Yeh Blackbeddy has mentioned it a couple of times now and even posted up some pics for us all. I think he said he might be doing it to another of his vans at some stage and will take some pics of the conversion for us as he goes.

Is this right Blackbeddy or am I just running off at the mouuth? ::)

G'day

Yes I will be  copying the install for my CFL van. And yes I will be posting pictures and measurements.
I am even considering a Commodore V8 install as well.
I have just been offered a V8 Calais with a small rear end shunt for $1000.
Seriously considering it.
