Hey guys,
I'm looking at trying to source a captains chair and or swivel chair.
Any ideas of how to go about this?
-
You could try this
http://www.vanseats.com.au/products/swivel_van/swivel_van.html
or I saw a toyota campa 4 sale with swivel seats
take seats and re sell
http://perth.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-for-Sale-van-ute-Townace-vans-must-sell-2-for-1200-W0QQAdIdZ68271762
Yeah I know your in Brizzy and this is in perth but look at that sort of option locally or find a crowd in brizzy that decks out campers.
best of luck. 8)

Look up KAB Seating in your area they will have what you are after but be warned they are very expensive as their products are all ADR approved

Maymann,
I found some trick ones on Ebay motors on the Ebay USA site (not Ebay Australia).
If you ship them by sea (3 months) the quotes I got were around $300.
Depending on what you get the chairs for, you may consider doing it.
I had some really good ones lined up and then got outbid...
I'm always on the look out! Another nice option are the 70's models Mercedes seats.
Driver and passenger have big built in arm rests. I have seen these seats in wreckers often
just rotting away... The Merc ones wouldn't be a straight fit - they would have to be re-sprung
and re-trimmed.
My mate is an auto trimmer so no seat is 'un-fixable' think I may go the Merc
option if I can't find the captains seats. ;)

If you're handy or have access to a workshop you could make your own swivel bases. I made mine and they work well and are certified. I was going to take some pics of them and post on the other site for someone but forgot. Now it's been raised here as well I'll get onto it and post some pics.
Garry.

Or use Delica seats - they mount on easy bolt on flat-to-the-floor rails and are only $270 including seatbelts...

I did find one guy in a ring around that said they get them regularly - but I decided not to go that direction and cant for the life of me remember which wrecker it was - sorry... think it was in yellow pages and referred to wrecking mitsubishis as one of a few brands they specialise in

Hi all,
Managed to get some pics of the swivel bases I made up years ago. These are fully certified.
Passengers seat showing release leaver on side.
This is the base with the seat removed. The lever is pushed down to release the locking pin and swivel the seat. Standard CF runners are used under the seat. The cap screw in the centre of the base releases the swivel section. The other 4 cap screws release the tube to allow for the top bearing replacement if ever needed.
This is the locking unit. The locking pin is hardened at the bottom and spring loaded to automatically drop into the locking hole.
This is the swivel base viewed from the bottom. There are two roller bearings, one you can see, the other is at the base of the tube. You can also see the brass block the locking pin slides in.
This is the base bolted into the floor. Doubler plates are welded under the floor to bolt into. The base plate is at 15 degrees to the spigot to allow for the slope in the floor. The drivers seat is the same as this but with the release lever on the opposite side.
Hope this helps. It's a bit of an overkill really but is strong, works, is certified and cost me nothing to make.
Cheers,
Garry.
-
Thanks for the pics Garry, great looking setup
What size is the shaft and bearings ?
Warren
-
Good question, well asked. Can't say for sure without pulling it apart again, but the shaft is about 40mm dia. The bearings are just two I had loafing around so not even sure what they were originally for. Any large dia roller bearings will do the trick as the axial loading they can take is about 100 times more than the load you'll put them through.

looks really really really good garry.. thanks for that!

Thanks Garry
I asked because I have been playing around with simplifying the design and was wondering what size shaft would support the weight and loads.
I had thought of using tapper roller bearings on a say 3/4 to 1 inch shaft, like a headstem on a bike.

Wow Garry! You're a chief! That's high Tech! ;)
I cheated, mine came from America. I can't remember if they were out of a Dodge or a Cheverolet originally.
-
thanks for the pics garry great pics and very cool seat base :) gives me a lot to think about
-
Hey Garry,
why dont you work our how much it would cost to make some of your swivel bases,
then put a mark up on them ( you have to make some money for doing it)
Im sure that a few of the guys on here would be interested in buying them
-
Yes Garry, a little bit of a over kill, but at the same time a work of art. Mine are very basic when I look at yours but carry a full cert too.
Mine are from the 80s when I worked for many years at Gemini Plastics, might even had these one's fitted in (Windsong) I no Ian knight had them in his (Strip Hauler).
-
Could make up some more but just don't have the time to get all I need done let along build more stuff. Maybe later on if time permits.
Hey Bas, so you were at at Gemini. Spent a few hour there with Ken I think it was. That's going back a few years. Bound to have met up at some stage. I didn't have swivel seats in Windsong, just a couple of single bases but glad I have them in this one. Very handy. There's plenty of options around. Some boats places make a nice swivel base but most are crap. Some jap import cars have nice swivel bases fitted as well which couild be adapted although they might have to be increased in height a bit.
-
Yes Garry, worked many years with Ken, helped make all the moulds for the bedford and transits fitted about 100 or so, those were the days. Was one of the first members of West City Vans with Lindsey duffy not that great of name but our DARK purple teeshits we designed back then were great a pub with the vans parked outside. Good to see the club is still going. The thing I miss the most was the Black Sands get together they were magic, and ofcourse how could we forget the van drags, "O" those 80s were great. Time to put a coat of paint on your van, seen mel's transit yesterday still not painted as well, busy days I guess.
-
West City vans, small world. I was in west city around '84 as a social member as was to young to have a van, but following year got one. Was when the Thames vans (John, Ian, Steve) and morrie (Andy) were right up there with the beddies

Hi all,
I just bought a set from Knox industries, otherwise known as Winnebage, in Emu plains Western Sydney. They are listed on Ebay, if you put Captains Chairs into the search engine, it also comes up with some leather ones. I pais $500 over the counter. these are from last years model RV's. and they are no longer using them. Take a look anyway
Cheers
