give it a spray of start ya bastard down the carb then wind it over
if it goes check you fuel pump/carb could even be stale fuel
if it don't go then look at electrical stuff, check for spark etc

when you turn the key on does any lights come on on the dash, or just nothing? is it auto or manual? definatley an electrical problem, check the start wire is plugged into starter motor, if auto check the inhibit switch on the shifter could be faulty. of nolights on dash at all then could be ignition switch faulty or battery feed to ignition switch.

As has been said does ignition light come on when your turn the key on.  If it does take the distributor cap off and move the points open see if you get a spark there, preferably dont touch the metal part of the screwdriver you are holding, :o  :o or if you do and it sparks you will soon know it should give you a kick  ;D ;D ;D  As its a manual put it in gear and try rocking it to see if the motor turns over, it might not go because it seize up, that might be why it didn't start and its been in the shed for 5 years, just a few more suggestions.

If you are screwing around trying to test your electrics with the battery that came with the van then I strongly suggest you biff it and get hold of one that you know is good even if you have to borrow it from your car (or even better your girlfriend's car). The original battery is more than likely stuffed having sat around for 5 years and never take the word of someone else such as the previous owner when fault finding. It is quite possible the second battery he used to test the van was another one he just had lying around.

rouge is right.

throw the battery away. its dead and wont charge.

life expectancy of a battery is like 5 years max for a vehicle thats run every day. (althou my old man got 11 years out of a battery once but thats exceptional)

a van that sat around for 5 years id say it probably died 4 and half years ago.

get a good battery then start trouble shooting..

remember the 'ol girl has been sitting for 5 yrs?. :'(..........remove spark plugs before starting as this will make turning the motor over alot easier, check the oil isn't milky and or sludge, replace if so.you will need to get the oil back up to the top also to avoid any damage, remove rocker cover and poor a good cup over the rockers check for signs of moisture/rust on any parts.
Start with a fresh new or good battery, clean your earth's as well ,check your fuses, then just basically chase the battery leads and freashen the connections (loosen twist/clean tighten), now you know you have good power to the starter, and good oil /lubrication ,turn her over..... you can leave the rocker cover off just to see the oil "come up"then stop and replace rocker cover, spark plugs (new ones-cheap enough)....try again.
is there now fuel in the fuel filter? is it full of sludge/grit?  replace.
ok , do you have fuel pressure ? fuel at the carby? you might have to "prime" your fuel pump and carby, if so...
check your spark, then as mentioned you might have stale fuel in the carby/fuel pump, then that's another mission, not big but another mission....all part of learning/ beddiphilia. good luck!   it's a HUGE reward bringing the dead back to life......another one saved !

bens right it even if the battery does charge it won't hold charge..."borrow" a battery from another car....or if you don't want to spend too much buy a battery from the local wreckers...save moneys and all you have to do is get them to test it and make sure its a good one...they'll even throw in 3 month warranty usually...once you try a good battery if theres still nothing happening the battery may not be earthing properly....lol good old corrosion...best way to tell if a battery is not earthing properly...get someone to stand in front of the car...(obviously not while its in gear) if your headlights turn on instead of the car turning over battery is not earthing properly...if that is the case clean the terminals or replace the earth wire...or if your lazy like me get a jumper cable an attach from negative terminal to engine... otherwise everything dano said is good...

What Dano says is spot on.
Just one thing. If your earth wire to the van is in the usual place-move it.
I have found a couple times drilling a new hole for the earth wire solved some silly gremlins.
You can laugh but it worked 4 me.
Also you might want to look under the ignition switch and make sure there is no moisture or corrosion.
Oh and even if the battery is new, I still jump start the first time-just a thought.

take your plugs out, take  the dizzy off & make sure its in nutral. see if you can turn it over by hand or a big socket & strong-arm.

it maybe tight or part seezed for sitting over the years...   ???

one old trick i know of is when you get itrunning turn it off, drain the old oil out & refill with desel fuel, start & let idle (dont rev..) for about 20-30 min.

Drain out & put on a new oil filter & oil.

man what a diff it makes to the motor sound & running. (from on old school drag racer)
