Hi guys,
I'm about to start sourcing parts to do a 9" conversion and just wanted your opinions on what width would be best. I'm going to pickup a standard 9" and lengthen it so I'll be able to go any length I want.
Would I be best going the standard Bedford width or go a bit narrower like the Ford Galaxy?
Thanks
-
hey ShaneJ, there are a few things to consider, the biggest drama I suppose is wheel sizing, stud pattern to match whats on the front, I have a 9" under the camper and 14 x 8 fit nice without flares, if you are putting flares on then you need the beddie diff width to fill the flares, have a look at Danos pix he has a great fit with his diff. Take a look at my gallery in the 'have a second look beddies album' theres a pic of a beddie with Suzuki wheels and fit great on standard beddie, are you engineering your own diff? I am still waiting for my beddie diff with a borg warner centre modification (its at a mates and hes oh so sloooowwwww with rebuilding the diff) that diff will be swapped for the 9" when he (if he ever) finishes the rebuild. Then the 9" I have will be available but don't hang of fit cause matey is oh so slooooowwwwww. There is alot of info on the :) old site regarding this subject

I wont be having flares fitted and I'll be sticking with the standard ford stud pattern(5x114.3).
I'll be doing the work myself as I do a fair bit of diff work, mainly shortening but lengthening is pretty much the same principal.
-
uuh in that case can you look at mine? :'(
-
As long as you deliver it.
-
eh its all about wheels shano..
-
I don't want to have to chase around for rare offset rims. Being able to fit standard ford rims would be nice.
-
hey Shane thanx for the offer, but me no go to Qld soon ::)
-
No worries mate.

Hi Shane. Have been looking at putting Borg Warner Ford :-[ EA EB diff into Alien8. EA is 62 and half inches wide, needs some alteration, have got most of the info. The finished size will be 64 and half inches. So its only half an inch narrower than the beddie diff. Also they have disc as standard, so you can keep your ford wheels . But have since been told that the AU and BA are wider than the EA EB Just have to find out how much wider, if it is it should fit straight in without any mods.
Besides Borg Warner diffs plenty of and lots of ratios and cheaper than a 9 inch.

The problem for me is that the borg warners are a pain to change ratios. You should be looking into Hilux diffs too.
-
Hey Shane, How often are you going to be changing ratios, ??? you don,t have to change every time you change the oil ;D ;D
Julian
-
Not often but when you have to change it that first time you'll be wishing you want to something easier. ;D
-
;D i have just brought a AU ford diff for my SWB and they are 64" form drum to drum.the current diff is a 2.75:1 and its maken the 253 rev pretty hard.I picked it up for $100 NZ from a mate that owns a wreaker in Hamilton.

G'day
A useful hint if you are going to do a diff conversion, or change the ride height, is to check the driveline angles.
Some people get caught on this one including a bloke that bought a good Chevy diff from me and claimed that it was no good because of a bad vibration. Wedges were put under his diff to correct a missalignment and then there was no vibration.
This can be an issue if you are lowering a vehicle or doing a motor/gearbox conversion.
Check out:

Even lateral angle is be an issue:

Hey - lightbulb moment
I had a valiant wagon that when fully loaded would vibrate on heavy bumps, I never realy twigged to what caused it.
Never did sort it out :D

Thanks for the info chris.
I raced stockcars for 9 years and have done a couple diffs and axles but never now it all. Always someone that knows a little more than i do.
I have found all the people wickedly helpfull on this site.
Cheers mate

G'day Waikatostocky. Have got a 1977 Chevy Caprice diff in Alien8 at the moment, 2.77 ratio, 253 and trimatic. Great when you get it wound up, but almost goes backwards when you get a decent hill. With the AU diff do you know if you can get the diff ratios around the 3.25 mark, would that make the 253 run better. If they are 64 inches it will save me getting the XD/XE diff altered, even though its only going to cost about $300. to widen the diff and redrill the axles and drums.

:DHi Julian,Try this link as they do make a 3.23:1 in the AU Falcon.

A correction is required by me on the weith of the AU diff ( dum A##se)
AU Diff is 62" and i have got 16x8 mags with 245/60/16 and there is about 20mm clearance on the inner guards.
Hopefully wont have to flare guards on the back.

Hi waikatostocky ( Do you have a nick name that is a bit shorter) I have just bought a XE sedan, and going to put the borg warner diff (disc brake) into Alien8. Have to get another diff and then replace the short axle with the long axle. I have to get second one with a 3.2something ratio, the one I just got is 2.77 thats what already in Alien8. That will then make it 64 and half inches wide. cost about $300 to get it altered. Will be able to keep the 15 x 8 dragways and they will fit under the fibreglass flares. Going to fit the full dash including air con into Alien8, on its rebulid next year. Just getting all the parts I need before I start.

Hey julian where about did you get your 15 x 8 drag ways? Because i just bought some 14 x 10 drag ways for my lwb but the biggest tires i can find for them is 265;) and that fits on an 8 inch rim. Lucky i didnt pay much for the 10s. May be a blast from the past on my garage wall;)

Sorry Ben, typing error, They are 14 x 8. front and rear. 245/50 x 14 front and 265/50 x 14 rear. Yokohama Radial 352. Had them on the beddie when we bought it in 1998 . The rears were 10,s but changed them to 8,s now the same all round. There is a Dragway factory in QLD and had a look in the catalogue from Bob Janes (about 6months ago) and you can still get Dragways pretty sure you can order them in 15inch as well 14inch.

Hey julian i had a dream last night that you had drag way 18's on the back of alien so you could get tires lol. Yeh i got a quote for new 15 s and they were like $560 each. 2 wheels and its more than i paid for the van lol;)

Hey Eddy, hows that diff of yours going? I could do with your 9" about now ;)
-
hey shane bro, the 9" is firmly transplanted under the tow van. Warren welded the dorppers for the shockies a coupla weeks ago so shes adapted to fit, gotta get the brakes looked at cause the left side is clunking? when I use the brake pedal ? dunno whats caused it maybe the additional thingy majingy in the brake line or perhaps a slave cylinder not operating on one side. The beddie diff with the borg warner centre is STILL at the mates place and I'll keep that as an alternative should the 9" give me woes.
-
haha, no worries mate.
What 9" do you have?
-
I'll eventually get some pics up, more than likely this weekend. not sure of its origin but it has the massive sized finned drums.
-
Ahh the finned drums are a sign its from an old Fairlane or similar. I don't think the F-Trucks had finned drums. I could be wrong though.
-
The 1st custom beddieI restored (1st pic) in my gallery had the diff from a F100 and was not wide enough for flares even though I had 14 x 10 dragways on the rear. This diff is not wide enough for flares either, not even with 14 x 8. I will be cutting the rear flares to fnish closer to the body so the look is not too drastic. I like the look of no flares but the missus wants flares so the van doesn't look like an old stockie? she would rather a custom look so the 4 x 4 drivers towing their big caravans will think we got something special ??? funny business caravan egos dunno why cause all they do is park up in a caravan park with a hundred other vans full of mainly old people (woops does that mean that I am becoming one?)
-
Young people camp in tents do they? ??? :P
Hey Hervey bay is just up the road a few hours. I might have to come for a run one day while you're up and I'll buy you a beer.
