Title: fuel tank
Post by: hotrod on July 08, 2010, 09:38:32 PM
Gidday guys
Have just remove my tank to clean as sick of filter blocking up/no fuel flow (in record time) with 'sand' and  trying to get fuel to flow properly so thought I would start at the back and work forward.
My question is that I have a spare tank that is identical except for a about 100mm tall and 40mm across cylindrical 'thing' next to the sender unit, it has pipes from it back into tank
What is this 'thing'
also rattling around in my tank i found another 'thing' this one looks like but is not an old bullet shell (bigger) with a marble inside. it is obviously some sort of one way valve.
has it fallen in off someones siphon or has is fallen of something inside the tank?

sounds like the end of a siphon hose to me

The first 'thing' is the breather arrangement and the second 'thing' sounds like the end off a siphon hose.

yeah I have one of those second things.
It is at the end of a piece of tube and you wiggle it in the liquid and it magicaly draws the fuel up to start a siphon.
I love it.

Short of starting a new thread i thought i would continue with this one...

Fuel Tanks...  it is rather small in my opinion.

I plan on doing some long distance driving with a 253 v8 in her...  just wondering what options i have for a second tank or upgrade the existing tank
I think it has about 60L in it at the moment.  Did they come out with a larger option?

I would love a second tank, so do they fit?
What about a kewl drop tank at the back?

Also...  filling is a biatch with trickle feeding really the only option.  Any tricks to allow me to increase the flow rate?  I was thinking along the lines of a new filler that is located higher up the body and increase the breather hose.  Any other opinions?

Cheers guys

Gas has got very expensive and rare in the bush. I have a Bedford van setup on straight gas but had too much hassle getting it so I had to park it.

yeah straight gas isnt a good idea at all.
unless you stick to high traffic areas,

yeah we are paying over 80c a litre now..  it is an option, but i would prefer to run straight petrol..

so...  does a second tank fit?  or is a larger tank available? short of manufacturing one

thats good info John.
i guess a lot of standard vehicle tanks could be used,
just depends on how savy the person wanting to install it is.
as long as it fits somewhere under there in a safe location, its only brackets n fuel lines that need fabricating up

Get a tape messure and look at the space youve got under neath her and go to a 4x4 wrecker looking for auxilary tanks might be worth a try.

Guys, I have just custom fitted a vn 85 litre tank as a drop tank in the rear. Tight but I did get it to fit. Have to relocate both filler point in body and in tank itself.

Cheers

Hey Johnno, at the moment i am still debating on how to go. But the easiest and probably the cheapest for me will be to get a pair of custom tanks done. What i have done is cut out my battery rack under the cargo door, and i am looking at maybe a 100lt & a 60lt with an external V8 fuel pump and a small pickup/surge tank, with a switch on the dash to switch from tank to tank. It sounds complicated but the advice from a few people is that it is a 100% reliable system.
Being that i am an amputee, in the landcruiser i have dual tanks, 90lt & 50lt and when i am half way through the reserve tank i know its time to look at filling up. In my case if i run out of fuel, thats it i am stranded till i can get help, unlike able bodied people i cant just jump out and walk to the nearest station, so this is a good backup for me. My beddy tank was to rusty to reuse, so i am going to mount the tanks on either side of the van, being they are custom, i can make them to fill up every last millimeter of room till i get the capacity i want.

yeah straight gas isnt a good idea at all.
unless you stick to high traffic areas,
"ol futile" is dedicated to gas ,an i live out bush.... havin 3 gas tanks helps lol ..i  make sure one is always full... i think my total capacity is round 200 litres , 2 are joined  which i use as  the main an the 3rd i use as reserve, just make sure i always top the reserve up again, thought about duelling it  a few times , but always seem to find gas somewhere ...... havent bought petrol for years now..

My current van has a 100 litre custom made alloy tank on the driver's side, with new (larger) filler pipe.

My old van had a 150 litre LPG tank mounted horizontally across the rear interior, fitted perfectly. Lost a bit of storage space, but it was nice never having to worry about running out of gas.

Awesome discussion..

i will be taking some dimensions when she gets home from the shop..  those new shocks and bushes are going in today.

we have a few 4wd shops, i think that would be the go...  will go searching let you know what size fits right..
the commodore rear fit sounds like an awesome idea too..  any pics for a look?  you could even access the spare wheel in the back of the van if you did it right...

with the battery removal option.., where did you end up putting the battery?  under the bonnet?

just for comment, my F150 has 2 fuel tanks 85L each, switched from the dash, and then a 140L gas tank across the tray.  Has been ultra reliable and never run out of fuel.

My battery is in the passenger seat box, under the seat.

where would we send the get well card  ??? ??? ;D ;D... in rgards to the gas  guage.. does it run its own sender from the tank or use the original one already in the compartment?? ... cos therein lies the accuracy/inaccuracy of its contents, as they  never really were known for their  accuracy....

Hey skippy, i did some checking on these gauges a while back, and you actually get a sender with the gauge, and they are supposed to be fairly accurate if callibrated properly. They use them a lot in the hotrods.

my brother has a 98 falcon running on gas he is wrecking...  so..

gonna put the tank in the back...  somehow...  and the gas tank under the floor..  somehow..

that will give me 2 fuel (60 and 80L), 1 gas tanks (80L), but also somewhere to put the spare tyre (in the falcon tank)

sorry rizzo....  i dont know anything about sender units, hence not discussing it.

cheers for the link vanwolf..
have you got any of the finished product?

i will have to get under and have a look..  been working on the van all week..  still concentrating on the engine atm..  looks like a burned valve or worse..  so rocker covers coming off in the very near future.  i hoping it aint a lobe on the camshaft..  otherwise mr crower will need a visit.

i dont know for sure, but wouldn't it react with the petrol? and wouldnt take much to rupture it either.

Safety first

PVC pipe will soften with any aromatic hydrocarbon i.e. petrol, MEK etc. MEK is the base solvent that you use in the pipe glue.
If in doubt, take a small piece of pipe and soak it in petrol for a minute or two and pull  it out ans see how strong it will be......not.

I wanted to build a small tubular mixing tank and tested several plastics by putting a strip in a jar of petrol. the strips stayed straight for up to a month and then either very quickly went soft or completely dissolved. Do your homework!
