As promised I've done a bit of scanning this evening and here are a few old van photos I've pulled from the archive. I think this was a Lakeview Van Show in Levin. Would have been one of the last I attended before bailing on the NZ Van Association. I've got few more so will see how time permits tomorrow evening as well.

brilliant Rogue, keep em coming mate, love all these ol pics- inspirational!!
-
AWESOME Rogue, fantastic imagination by those vanners, they were the days. I second, keep em coming. I will need to hit the design pad to try and keep up the standard with my van. lol Well thats my shot of adrenalin, who needs drugs when you have BUGA.
Hey rogue, with all the custom work done to the outside of your van, are you going custom inside like some of these vans ?
george
-
Nope. I'll line the inside floor, walls and roof but that's as far as I'm going. I want a van to use as a van. I'm putting my internal efforts into the front where I will be spending my time. The vans pictured are great and a lot of effort has gone into them but they are totally impractical for day to day use and with the effort I am putting into it I want to use it.
-
'good one rogue, i still look forward to seeing the cab finished, i have a feeling it will blow our minds.

Here we go for round 2. Haven't got much more after this as I was never a great taker of photos. These ones were mainly from a Christchurch event in 1990 I think. It was the 'Garden City Grovel' held in CFJeff's hunting grounds with a couple of randoms at the end from a Wellington show.

Here's a couple of a Levin convoy. The white van in the bottom photo is mine just as I was starting to modify it from the standard van I purchased it as.

hey Rogue, some classic photos there!
I love the wooden barrel chairs, the batmobile lights on the silver one, and the trailer..
You fellas better keep your SWBs locked up, as i could do with a trailer... ;D
-
hey rogue, you have really taken my mind off my W.A headache, thankyou mate, they are great pics. Can anyone else match rogues pics. Here is my donation to the pic collection. These are pics of a mates van, hope he does'nt mind me posting. Enjoy beddy mates.
george
-
george, they don't look like N.Z plates to me :o ;)
-
well done Rouge, those were the days back when the beddy was the most popular van to do up and just about everyone made a custom interior. And intricately detailed ones at that, bring back deep buttoning and turned posts.
I only had the pleasure of seeing some of these vans in the flesh, as these pictured are from 1990 and 1991 and I entered the vanning scene in 1992. I know the whereabouts of only a few. The purple van with the pink and white z stripes is still on the road and living in your hood Rouge, it is now called "Nightvision" and painted blue. The trailer was in our club for many years and was sold in the mid to late 90's and moved to Nelson. A few years ago I caught up with its Nelson owner who had just sold it for about $100. One of our members said he is trying to buy it as it is back down here in Christchurch now, is expecting to pick it up for $150. The shortened black van with the blue stripe, its shell is living not far from where I live, however cancer has got the better of it and I dont think it will ever get rebuilt. Moonshine hawler was a few years ago being stripped back to bare metal by a guy in the north island as cancer had got a hold of it in a big way. About 3 years ago I talked to a young guy who'd bought it and was going to rebuild it and it is now down here in Christchurch also.
Anyhow great to go down memory lane back to the bedford heydays.
Cheers Jeff
-
Thanks for that update Jeff. I did suspect that about Nightvision. I think he had a picture of it in its former glory in his display at the Wellington show last year. That's a pity about the short Bedford. There's another pic of it in this last lot of snaps. Moonshine Hauler was a beautiful van in its time. It's always sad when the rust gets the better of them.
Anyway here are the last of the photos I have for you guys. You've sucked me dry so enjoy! These were from one of the first shows I attended and I think it was in Levin again with Lakeview Vans. One of their 'Freeze Inns'.

hey matte, his van is right here in brissy, i havent seen it around for a while now, i think he has replaced it with his swb show van. I suspect he still has it, the van above was loaded with plenty of goodies, so i doubt he will let it go. Last time i spoke to him, he was stripping it back to a bare shell, and starting all over again.
I prove my point, 6th pic down, a beddy and transit together, give me the beddy everytime.
george

awesome, i have seen 3 of those vans growing up.
I don't have a scanner anymore but I'll try photograph some of my old van pics from the Auckland shows, some down as far as Tauranga
-
David. drop around and scan some, or grab the sanner and take it home. Bas
-
I've tried photographing the photographs but the photos weren't that great to start with, think there is 55 all up, some are out of order but I'm sure you can work out which goes with which

Sorry about the bad pictures, was only a young fella with a real cheap and nasty camera - hanimax ?
I'll try add some notes to each post to help work out whats what, example the grey/gold bedford is mirror image before the make over, abbrevation was yellow in england then came her white, photo was taken in car park of rod show

Here's some pictures of one of the vans that inspired me. This was a local van that was sold recently. It had sat in a workshop unused for years but I remember lusting after it all those years ago when I was at school. Actually I don't really want to think how long ago that was now. :'(

that looks amazing! could that be just house hold carpet? or would it not be flexable enough?
ben
-
dont think much of the carpet inside but love the commie front end. what running gear was in that van ?
-
shane
if the owners dont mind can we save theese photos to a gallery album? As i think they have historical value for nz vanning. And serv great motorvation.
Thanks guys ,its so good to see fresh stuff.
-

I think it was house carpet from memory. I had a friend whose brother knew the owner quite well and I think it was done by a carpet layer.
dont think much of the carpet inside but love the commie front end. what running gear was in that van ?
Once again from the fading memory I think it was a 350 motor. No idea what the rest was.
It was an incredibly heavy van. All the panel mods where double skinned. Panels attached over the existing ones. The bonnet was amazingly heavy for its size with all the extra steel and fibreglass you actually had to get under it to push it up. It had a double pair of hinges each side.
-
Awesome photos guys, 70s really were the best for custom vans. Rogue i have been looking at pics of that van for a while now, but that is the first time i have seen the inside of it, thanks mate. Great van.
george.
-
It reminds me of a VW when l was young, it was covered in the same carpet and it showed me it's good to be diffrent :D
-
Anyone else having problems seeing pages 3 & 4 ??
Warren
-

george
