so... if i were to join this prestigious club, what commitments would be required?
I dont mind high roller shirts, not overly keen on stickers, but may consider signs that i can put up or take down..
Will it include attending rod shows and cruises?
Or has noone though this far into the procedings?

Either way im keen on everything, bar stickers on the van  ;D
Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: obsession on January 19, 2010, 09:29:21 PM
that depends on the person ,mostly its  just organizing runs and making arrangements attending car shows when vans are available weekends away not really to different from what we have on the web site just perhaps a bit more often ,a couple of us have been involved with clubs before and with the highrollers name I think ken may still have all the club stuff so wed be off to a good start
stickers and t shirts are really up to the individual Iv always preferred the number plate frames with stickers on them that way there not a permanent fixture on the van.Il ring ken tomorrow and see what stock he has left if any.

Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: obsession on July 15, 2010, 09:58:16 PM
well hers a few things to think about -------
how do you keep club runs seperate from buga runs
in what form do you want the club to take

I personaly would always want guys to turn up to a run and would welcome both , youd never really be able to stop them and if you did it would be to the clubs detrement.
so how do you encorage memberships without discrimnating against those who pay to be members

Pay? yea thers stuff like club t shirts newsletters , ect so come on throw down those ideas.
Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: The Griff on July 16, 2010, 07:24:22 PM
I say everyone's welcome but members can humilate non-members any way they see fit.

So, yeah, count me in.
Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: MaTTe on July 16, 2010, 07:46:44 PM
I think the idea of members only is great incentive to join up, but maybe a single use pass for each buga member to attend a high rollers cruise and evaluate how much they think they need to be a member...

So this AGM is for currnet board members, or all potential members?
I'm keen depending on commitments at the time...

Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: John Abbott on July 17, 2010, 12:00:36 AM
Well i have been thinking about this post for a little while....And this is what i think...I have been a member of a car club now for pretty much 30 years (Morris Car Club of W.A) . I havnt been as active in the club as i used to be, but i still roll up to about 2-3 events a year, mainly to catch up with some old friends that are still in the club.I no longer own a Morry but still enjoy seeing them on the road, and it brings back very fond memories of my younger days. When i bought my beddie truck, i became a member of the
"Old Holden.com" forum /club. I even went along to a couple of meets and runs around perth, but because i was the only beddie in the group i felt a bit on the outer. I found the members that i met very friendly and VERY knowlegble on a whole range of things. But it wasnt until i found this site and got to meet a few of the members that i found that i had a club/enthusiasts that really catered for me and my love for beddies. It is the fact that we enjoy our bedfords that this site is here in the first place.!! Unfortunately i wasnt active in any van clubs in my early years, but i was around to see the huge popularity of panel vans in the 70-80s. Would i roll up to a van club run with my Beddie van? Bloody oath i would ,and if there were other big vans there, all the better. But i can still appreciate the work that go into the holdens, fords, valiants, ect. Whatever type of van it is, its the people that really make a club a success. This BUGA club/forum will still be around to cater for our specific type of vehicle, but like the other vans ,we are getting a bit thin on the ground .Be it a buga run or highroller run, everyone should feel welcome. cheers....Johnno ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: MaTTe on July 17, 2010, 01:21:45 AM
John, i think you're right in many ways.
I also feel that having an 'exclusivity' to the high rollers club validates it, as well as giving some purpose to the buga members to organise buga specific runs...

If we start the high rollers runs on regular occasion, pretty soon it will become a case that every run is a high rollers run to get the name out there, and then it'll be 'sponsored/endorsed' by buga, rather than being two seperate entities.....

The other advantage is that the buga runs can cater towards the bedfords more exclusively, as the high rollers could very well be dominated by sandmans and the like.

Maybe a compramise is that anyone can come to the meet point, then all attendees have to continue forth in high roller member vans. This way you still have the ability to catch up with old friend and foe.

I have no idea of the cost of membership, but i would expect that it is reasonable or atleast manageable. If anyone wants to go on high rollers cruises on a regular basis the memberships shouldn't be out of the question for them...

For non members a free single use pass per year would enable old members the ability to catch up spontaneously as you have in the past.....

And for those that find all this too stressful, if the cruises are of the layout where we cruise thru the streets and eventuate at a park or similar to put the vans on display and potentially have a bbq or the like, non members should be more than welcome to attend the park and have a look at the vans as any member of the general public would, they just wouldn't be entitled to having the van on the cruise or display....

Just a few thoughts. doesn't really worry me either way
Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: Jeff on July 17, 2010, 09:31:16 AM
Clearly I am not involved from NZ, but my thoughts on the matter are:
This is very much a minority interest, and if vans get turned away for whatever reason, then it can only diminish the chances of building up the numbers, which needs to happen to make the club viable.
You could let anyone with a suitable van participate fully as a guest, but not as a member.
If the event is enjoyable then they would want to join up anyway, but if they don't do that then nothing is lost, and those people have contributed to the critical mass that makes the club interesting and attractive to other potential members.

Hey Matte, i hope you guys in perth get the High Rollers up and running again. Q. As we all know the bugger site is for anyone with a beddy or love of beddys. And when there is a run we see the good, bad and if you can call a beddy ugly, well the abused, lol Back in its day the high rollers was mainly custom and show vans, is that going to be the case with it's resarection. My point being if it is, then you would want members with the same thought, cruising in a convoy of high end show vans, you could then hold cruises through the year for non members or guys with less then show quality vans. As a non WA resident, was the original rollers a van club for all show vans, HQs so on or was it just beddy's and transits and big vans. Here in qld we have sunstate panelvan club. I guess the big Q. is can you get enough members with the cash to have a full on show van, as i'm finding, i wanted my van on the road this year, now its next year, and the set back in the last few weeks, has me wondering when now. But i will. Hey just my 1cents worth. lol.

Interesting topic this.  :) I can only use my experience through my  previous club to mention a few things i have noticed. Everyone was welcome to a morry club run didnt matter if you had one or not. There were many many times that a beautiful car would roll up from out of nowhere to join us on the run then never seen again. We have finacial members that we dont see at any event, so they must be happy to get their club magazine and thats it. We have members that have spent in excess of $20.000 or in one case $40.000 on restoreing their cars to showroom condition. These members that have the means to do that are very lucky, but a member who drives an old "bunky" everyday may not have the razzle and dazzle car ,but has been a committed and active member in the comittee and helps with organizing events ect. These people should NEVER  be discrimminated  for what they drive, after all they are there at the meetings and runs come rain or shine. ;D ;D ;D

I dont think a membership fee would put me off.  Whilst I havent commented before I think I'd join a club for the odd run, if lime green poptops were considered allowed in a highrollers club that is.
I would probably only be interested in a few runs per year either buga or highroller, but would join up as it is good to see bedfords driving around.

Yacht clubs seem to allow one or two sails per year without membership then request membership, however if crew dont pay they dont usually stop them sailing, although they might at the posher clubs.  Something like this would encourage people to come along, and when they met some of the personalities involved people would pay up to keep coming.

i dont think vans should be turned away, or discriminated - quite the opposite....
My van may look good now, but it looked shithouse 8 months ago. we all have to start somewhere.....

My points may not have been as transparent as i thought, there is an obvious cost associated with running a club, especially if you wish to run a club with any benefits (shirts, hats, magazines, hookers, etc.)
But if everyone can attend for free all of the time, then why would anyone pay? You cant afford to order a batch of shirts and hats for 3 people.....

BUGA is a free brotherhood, so those who can't afford to be within a club such as the high rollers still have an outlet to be able to cruise on a somewhat regular basis without cost or obligation.

I think as George has said the high rollers name implies done up and unique vans, but i think that should involve both past and present ASWELL as future aspiring vans..

If the cost is really that much of an issue, maybe we need to look towards different levels of membership? I can understand that people dont have alot of spare money, hell i can barely afford a tank of gas, i desperately need consistent work - however i'll find a way to make the payment to support the club, just as i would if buga were in need.
So maybe we have cruise memberships, that buy you the right to attend and display at every show and shine or cruise event
a donation membership that gives any attendees of cruises/show n shines the ability to give a gold coin donation(or higher) to receive a badge or bumper sticker stating their kind donation..
a correspondence membership that will gain you any information on potential cruises, a copy of the monthly/quarterly/yearly/whatever magazine, as well as any other information that is available to members
a merchandise membership that will gain you an article of each merchandise item at a special price(discounted on the RRP for the same items available for sale at cruises/show and shines)
and a membership for people that want all of the above

There are ways to make this affordable, as well as gainly for the club.... As alot of you have said, we need numbers to make it viable, but we need to validate the club by having memberships

but then again, if you want to make this all free and still have the benefits, im all for it, saves me a few dollars. haha

george looking fwd to seeing pics of your van keep up the good work mate
the highrollers has to my knowlage over the past 25-30 years never discrimnated against any level of bedford/transit or as their constitution says 'front mounted engins" howerver even this was got around as mark howletts howling kombie was on runs all the time so i dont reckon anybody would get a knock back .

My idea was realy just to have an open run fee say $5 bucks per van to cover the advert and any calls ect.
Full membership gets you T/shirt number plate frames.
Newsletters would depend upon getting numbers and contributions ect from guys .....but having said that the web is prolly the best sorce of news available anyway.

I like this topic its good to get ideas and stuff great to hear so much imput.

Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: Bedfordcrazy on July 18, 2010, 08:53:12 AM
Well put john and matte. As someone who only knew of the high rollers from the magazines back then, what was the yearly membership fee, and what would it be now if the club flys again ? Hey johnno, what do they charge for the morris club a year, as someone who has never really been a club member i'm sort of in the dark.

As i said b4 here in qld we have sunstate panelvan club, my mate is the president of that club and drives a beddy, but the club is mainly for small vans, but beddys are welcome, i would love to see each state with its own bedfords only club. If you look at the amount of beddys here, there would be enough to form a club in each state. Correct me if i'm wrong, but W.A is the only state that has a beddy club, and buga take care of the rest.
If you get the rollers up again i will join, even though i'm on the other side of the country, and will never do a wa run, it will be good to support a bedford club.
george.

Hi George...The membership fee is around the $90.00 dollar mark for a year. Alot cheeper than other clubs here.
Title: Re: Highrollers Van Club
Post by: Bedfordcrazy on July 18, 2010, 12:45:15 PM
Hey john, mate i recon if you are serious about being in a van club $100 a year is not a lot, and your right, i have heard of some clubs that charge 4-5 hundred a year.

I actually take note of everything that happens in buga, and i think the one thing i have noticed with our little group is, TIME, a lot on here are always so busy doing things other then beddy stuff, whether its the kids, work or other commitments, the other is, and correct me if i'm wrong, but a lot of us are of the mature age bracket and dont have the time and money for setting up clubs, and doing full on custom vans, attending and all the stuff that goes with it. I know that if we had a regular club in qld i would probably only commit to a show, get together or some other event maybe 4 or 5 times a year. Unfortunately these days, most of the shows are for these little 4cyl jap egg beaters, and hoon type cars to see who has got the biggest and loudest. The days of truely classic hot rodding is a dying thing. My sheet metal guy is finding this with me, he has only done a lot of bolt on stuff over the last few years, and now he is finding he has to dig deep and remember how to reshape metal, and get the gaps right, something he has not done for a while on this scale. But as he says, its good to really do custom work again, and not just bolt on plastic parts.

Ya know I always thought the "High" Roller name stemmed from the substance abuse of the time ;D ;).Obviosly we need some regs in place for the running of the club but lets not lose sight of the "social" in social club hey??? anyway thats my 5cents worth (rounded up)          Cheers Neil

without knowing your age benny, driveins were becoming extinct by the time you came along. By the late 80s - start of the 90s driveins were being transformed into shopping centres and housing estates. Why, one thing started the downfall of driveins, video recorders, people were staying in and watching videos, and as we know now, you can have a cinema in your home .
