Most people on here may have heard of a company in Australia called "Rare Spares" , they specialize in hard to get parts for holden ,ford, chrysler, and many other makes. So last weekend i decided to go to Rare spares in Osbourne Park here in Perth, to get 1 rockercover gasket and 2 side plate gaskets for the little 173 red motor thats in my van. This shop has everthing for restoring your pride and joy. Brand new consoles and dashes, those little clips and screws that hold on the door trims ect. ect. So i ask the fellow behind the counter "just after these gaskets please" he looks at his computer and say's " sorry mate those are dis-continued". "Your kidding!" i said "nope" he said. So i walked out of there and went to Coventrys and got what i needed there!! I couldn't believe that a company that is there to supply those hard to get parts wouldnt stock the most basic holden item you would need!!! ??? i am dumbfounded :-\

You could have been talking to a moron John. I've suspected that before especially on weekends and gone back the following day which is a normal week day, spoken to someone else and got exactly what I was after. Unfortunately most times the weekend staff aren't quite the elite.

Out of interest does any one know if unused head gaskets deteriorate?
My van came with a 202 head gasket in its new packaging, it has been on my shed wall for 3 or so years now, and the way my van motor keeps rattling on it might be there for some time yet.
Wondering if they are worth keeping, the only reason i havent tossed it out is that sod's law (or bedford law) says that if I do the gasket will need replacing.

dave it should be fine mate, we've raced on some very old gaskets with no worries. If the open air can destroy a head gasket, i'd hate to think what would happen to it during combustion...
