Hey guys, I just brought a CF for its running gear. Its got power steering off a Rover 3.5. Its great but loses heaps of its turning arc. 1st question is, can I modify it to turn tighter? A guy at Marshall Transmissions said one possibility (which I can hardly remember!) was changing something near the wheels? Otherwise what is the EXACT LHD Porsche rack I need to hunt down.
Cheers

Guys, I use a 1998 Transit, no problems easy fit / swap, cheap to buy lose 1" on lock each way.
-
what did you use for your steering coupling bas, would love to see some pics

I pick it up next week so will get pics then. The transit 1 sounds interesting Bas. Is it the same mod thats been floating around the net with pics for a few years now? Do u keep full lock? I love being able to do a U'ee in narrow streets

Its all here guys http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/powersteering.htm (http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/powersteering.htm) but I have a plate that bolts onto the old mounting point and then the powersteering unit bolts on to that, used Bedford steering coupling just put a linning in it and had it regroved, tirerod arms shortened and re threaded to fit Bedford tirerods. Thats all lose buga all lock. Also used Holden steering pump.

sounds very similar to the way i mounted the porsche unit into my bedy bas

Cheers Bas, did u do the work or who did?
-
Hi, had a engineer do the work / make the brackets, cut the tirerod arms and made the new thread and line-regrove the coupling. Then I fitted everything, 3 years ago it cost $360.00 for the work and holden pump $25.00 and Transit Power Steering unit 160.00. So $545 all up and ofcourse the lines a little bit.

Hey Bas, do you remember if the transit was a VF or VG. Seems the racks are different :(

Sorry Shane, I can't Remember, just brought from a local wrecker, it was out of a 4 cylinder, 2500cc, Manual 1998 model - Diesel, I know the rack was longer than the Bedford, the reason the tierod arms were cut down. It looks the same as the one in the post / link.

Hey Baz
Have you got any shots of the Transit rack in your van? I've had a nosey in your gallery but there isn't anything specifically around the rack.
Reason I ask is that I was trolling through the local Pick-A-Part today and they have a Transit in there at the moment and I'm seriously trying to talk myself out of going back to grab the rack however in light of the previous comment about there being two different versions I'd like to be sure that it is the right one.
There were 3 CFs in there as well so I got a few parts off of those too. Mostly trim etc but also got the little rubber piece that the petrol cap screws into as well. Most pleased about that as I noticed mine was cracked when I pulled the fuel tank out and was a bit worried about finding another one.
Ta very much!

Hi Baz, Hi All, I am new to the site, even though I have had my 75 SWB for about 15 years. Because I am now a double amputee I really need to fit up power steering, trying to use handcontrols and no power steer I think will be a nightmare. I saw your info on the transit rack baz, do you have any detailed photo's of your install that I can look at, to try and move my build forward a bit quicker. I hope to have my van back on the road early next year, the power steering is the last big hurdle, I hope, but as any good bedford owner knows when customising, nothing goes smoothly. I have started to post my build pic's from 96 when we first got the van, 2009 pic's coming soon are when I came back to the world of the living.
George.....LIFE IS SHORT...GRAB IT WITH BOTH HANDS AND RUN. ;D
