G'day

Back in the 80's the English Hot Rodding magazine had a picture of a lCFL van with a Vauxhall grill and about 300mm chopped at headlight level. It was lowered as well and actually looked really good.

Thanks Dano! I'm using Photoshop CS3. It's very easy to get some pretty cool results once you know your way around the program. It's got all the tools you need.

The truth is,if we could produce a kit that lowered a van that much the youngen's would be all over em.
So a lowering kit,a power steering kit and a air cond kit please Ben!LOL :D

regards lowering kit: would you rather fit;

  A) new front chassis rails (could these be grafted to a sub chassis) and floor sheet metal retaining bedford steering and geometry, which I think works quite well
  B) or try and figure out the steering geometry and modify an endless list of parts and Machining????

what do you think?

I'm tipping that the easiest way to lower the beddie is to attach aprons and skirts to the existing panel work as shown in the pic, take a close look and one can see that the side bottom panel and air dam have been extended down, that way you retain all the standard geometrics,  ;)

I will try to lower it a bit in the future, but I will have to get the drop spindles from Australia, as I don't see those any where in Europe..

Why weren't they great? Isn't that supposed to be the proper way to lower the front end?

now that looks real practical. id sugest putting 100 little rollers under the van so when you go to scrape everywhere you go it lifts the body up and rolls over it rather than scraping:)

Post by: Warren on September 10, 2010, 06:44:23 PM
I dont think its photoshoped, I think its real, if you look where the tailgate goes you can see the car beside it in the gap, most photoshop jobs arnt that good.

I think that instead of choping to the body crease line, a cut 3 or 4 inches higher would have made it look even better.

It looks like a SWB but those side doors look cut down, nice proportions but :D and suicide as well  :o

The front wheel is photoshopped as it has standards on the front at the moment, the rest of the van is real. I took the photo today & cant stop looking at it! Still got a way to go but Im soooooo stoked!

...and it use to be a LWB but I got rid of the extra part behind the front doors to make a longer tray...

The hardest thing in a roof chop is getting the screen cut so the easiest way around this to lay the screen back that way you still have a standard windscreen and a more streemlined look
Regards
Petrolhead
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!
Post by: rossie on September 21, 2010, 10:18:46 AM
Petrol that depends on how much you are taking out of the roof, l personly recon it is easier to cut. One of the major things to concider is the glare from the screen due to the angle. But they all look cool ;D
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!
Post by: petrolhead on September 21, 2010, 10:27:17 AM
Finding somebody to cut your screen is almost impossible and fitting plastic is a no,no thats why I suggested laying the screen back, as for glare what angle are the screens on newer vehicles
Regards
Petrolhead
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!
Post by: rossie on September 21, 2010, 10:45:14 AM
Thats why l said it, the glare that comes of my wifes car, an AU, should not have left the factory. Any real glass joint can cut the glass, We have a pilkintons, l think thats how you spell it, one of the bloke who works there does it after hours, he has even done it on EK's and early chevs(54) and fords(52 and53). Flat glass can be done at home on a kitchen table. It's not that hard, alot of people are just scared of breaking the glass (its not a mirror). Making a 2 door EJ holden we laid the glass back and lowered the roof, it was the hardest thing l was involved in, all ridges have to be cut and modified to the angle of the glass, or custom rubbers

Hey Busy, mate i had a look at the pics in your album, and let me say, between you and rogue, you guys are the kings of kiwi beddy custom, awesome mate. I remember the first time i saw your site showing the build, and that was years ago now, how far is your van off being finished, i mean do you have all the fabrication done and its ready to go back together, or are you still fabricating, not that i would think there is much more you can do to it, it is a custom show van. Is it going to have a flash paint job, airbrushing or a plain paint. I can't wait to see you and rogues fully painted and side by side, will be a great day for custom beddy's.

george.
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!
Post by: BusyKiwi on November 09, 2010, 06:01:27 PM
Thanks George, plenty more talented people than me out there, Rogue, Jeff, Garry, Bas ... all craftsmen

yeah my van has been going on a bit unfortunity, I'm not building it for a show van, I'm just building it *add reason here - am sure there was one*.
I have finished modifying it (hopefully), am in the process of the panel work now. I still have to build the dash and engine cover but everything else is pretty much done, back 2/3 I've wired up, just the dash to go, and with the air con unit it's a nightmare, all fuel, brake and water lines/pipes are in, engine runs, just don't want to drive it yet - else i wont stop driving it lol
My friends reckon get sponsorship from the energy drink companies or sound places and paint to suit but I'm thinking more of finding an up and coming airbrusher, someone trying to break into the scene and let them show there stuff so can hopefully get them a foot in the door. I just want flames on it somewhere

I get inspired by coming here everyday, everyone here is different and has some great ideas, lots of great vans on here, that's what makes it so great.

edit: Ok i just thought of something I might be changing, the more I look at the side of the custom van the more I miss the CF window inserts, so if I do anymore mods it will be putting them back in, oh and I haven't finished the bonnet, that might be split in two yet (opening sideways)

Didn't you flatten out the side panels on the custom? If so and you decide to put some glass back in, frenching them would look really cool.

Hi busy...I was looking thru your gallery as well, and was wondering wether you unpicked the whole wiring loom from commy and installed it into the Beddy? and if so , was there any modofying of it at all? ;D ;D ;D

John, John, John. You know the golden rule of modifying a Beddie.

"The only thing that fits straight in a Beddie is........"  :P
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!
Post by: BusyKiwi on November 10, 2010, 06:18:17 PM
I put the main dash bunch in the dash area and worked from there kinda

If anything I only extended bits of wiring.
Starting from the back ...
I put the plug that joins the main loom in the engine bay and if memory serves the length was good to the very back panel (thats where i joined into the bedford tail light wiring), I left the reverse lights wire there incase i wanted to use it later on but removed all the other wires the commodore has (rear demister, boot popper ...), the fuel tank wires I just bunched up instead of shortening them.
pretty sure the engine harness was untouched
i mounted the main fuse box on inner guard (heaps of wires shoved into the guard area).
I think I extended the wiper motor wires, front speaker wires, shifter and trans bit.

A lot of it i was able to move around within the bunch and just retape it so it came off the loom where I wanted it.

It was a Calais so had all the bells and whistles, I have two interior lights in the van and already had door switches so wired all that into the commodore loom which is cool as the interior lights stay on for 10 secs or so after you close the door, also needed for the built in alarm. I have kept the wiring for the doors, but haven't used them yet, the plugs end at the edge of the dash, so if i ever wanted to put in electric mirrors, electric windows, central locking, door light the wiring is all done.

I've also added some things, the cig lighter for example ends up down by the shifter (is plugged), i left the plug there but tapped into the loom and put the cig lighter up on the dash, and also put in a dash light in the dash compartment (used a number plate light)

In short, a little bit here and there ;)

Thanks for that Busy...I intend to utilise as much from the donor car as i can. When i do eventually get to start my van, expect a few dumb questions for a while until i can sort things out myself ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!
Post by: Bedfordcrazy on November 10, 2010, 09:07:30 PM
A lot of work busy, but worth it if you want the luxuries. Because we gutted all the old worn out wiring, we are getting my sparky to build a complete new harness, it will have every last plug for all the gadgets. My sparky tells me it will be xy, but it will be heavy duty and will out last the van, and in years to come as all the new electronic gear comes out i will be able to just plug them in, and no rewiring to be done. And yes i will be having all the bells and whistles, i can't resist. lol  ;D ;D

would be cheaper to adapt an existing loom

the VN commodore loom I used for example is made for the mtr/computer and has warnings for oil/brake/water .... which has to be programmed, thats on top of the warning dash lights, and being fuel injected ....
Title: Re: Bedford Chops!

The problem i had with my VP was, that the only luxury item it had was the power mirrors, thats it, even the dash cluster was crap, so to get all the warnings and lights and stuff i just decided to create a whole new loom from tail lights to headlights. I am lucky my sparky only works on custom looms these days, and so far he has built me a new module to give me cruisecontrol. The other side of the coin is being in a wheelchair i have chosen to go new just for reliability, the last think i want is to be breaking down, so i am doing what i can to reduce that risk, by not overloading an old loom. I think my 06 cruiser has spoilt me also.  ;) ;D ;D
