Title: Monsoon Shield
Post by: scimitar79 on August 31, 2010, 10:31:55 AM
Does anyone have or know if they can be got, the clear perspex Monsoon Shield that clips to the door?
Used to be the rage on holdens back in the late 70's/80's, I've seen one van here in nz with a pair but that was awhile ago...
Cheers

Aussies call them 'Weather Shields'. You can do a search to find the couple of threads where this has already been discussed.

One of the guys suggested this site...  https://vault2.secured-url.com/ShopSecure/autocables/results1.asp?CategoryID=17&CarMake=BEDFORD

Someone else also got a set but I can't find their post. It's probably buried somewhere in the 'What have you done this week' thread.

Hey George....is that the remnants of a go kart in the back ground of your photo? I race karts with my youngest and we recently wrote his off in a nasty high speed accident and are in the process of rebuilding it.

You are correct kimbo, when i get my van finished i will get to finish it off, i used to race b4 ending up in the chair. A mate of mine, used to work in greg murphys V8 team, now works for a guy in melbourne, and they fabricate handcontrols for go-karts and super karts, so when i finish the van i will be fitting hand controls to it so i can race again. The hand controls are paddle style, throttle / brake. I also have a dune buggy here with handcontrols, and when the van, and go-kart are done then the buggy will get done for the grandkids. Man hope i live long enough to finish them all. lol  ;) My kart will be electric start, and as fast as i can get it to go. My problem will be fighting my 7yr old grandson for the first drive. lol   ;D ;D

How do these weather shields attach to the door? are they a clip on arrangement or is it more permanent? if there was a paintjob in sight, should I wait until painted or is it possible to take on and off? thanks

They should have little stainless steel clips that clip around the edges of the window frame. At least mine did. They are easily removable.

Mate if you can get me some detailed pics that would be awesome, i'm still looking at different set-ups b4 i do mine. I am surprised that they allowed them into the series, i spoke to someone a few yrs back and they did'nt want to know me, amputees wer'nt invited to join, different states i guess. I might consider getting involved again. I was just going to race at a local track near me, you pay a fee and you can bring your own kart to race instead of a hire kart. I went racing earlier this year in a hire kart, their set-up was so heavy, steering, and brakes needed  weight lifter arms to use, but loved it, first time since loosing my legs.

The ones I've seen in Super Cheap are just that, cheap and nasty. The whole thing is plastic and pretty horrible plastic at that. I used to have a set on my van before I had enough and bought some nice stainless units from ebay. You might be better off having a troll through ebay.

Sorry I have a set of these, the bars are Ali and all bolts and nuts are stainless, heads are plastic only but seems to be good quality, as most mirrors are plastic these days.
Phots to follow.............

Now that I think on it my ones had aluminium bars as well. There are a number of suppliers putting these things out and mine were from a different manufacturer if your box is anything to go by so yours may very well be of better quality. Mine did the job but they were the first thing to go when I decided to revamp the van.

On ebay. There are heaps of them on there. They're aftermarket replacements for the Chev or Dodge (can't remember off the top of my head) vans and pickups. Once again there appear to be any number of manufacturers. I landed my ones from the states to my door in NZ for $110.00 NZD.

I got these ones because a mate has had the same ones on his van for 3 years with no problems, and they still look like new (the black ones that is) Sorry Rouge like this style better as it's on a van not a car reminds me of a jap mirror. MY THOUGHTS ONLY

Each to their own  ;)  I've had 4 different styles of mirrors now including the originals. Times change as do my tastes.

And your van only moves a couple of feet now and them, at this stage I'm not sure you even need mirrors  ;D As I grew up in the 80's and my job was all day around custom vans, the old style mirrors is what I got used too. Hard to change.

Baz they are the the same ones I put on my van 4 years ago (the black head ones, I had them painted to match), I used to have west coasters before that but found they had a rather large blind spot. When you go to mount them i found they sat on an angle and looked a bit odd so I cut the bottom aluminum bar and redrilled it now they sit level which looks better. Just a suggestion if you want it to look better as a front profile.

Cheers Jeff

Can't argue with that  ;D I started off with the originals and then went to a set of stainless steel truck mirrors. They were a great set and really looked the part. Then I wrote the van off and decided to take the opportunity to remodel the front. The truck style mirrors didn't really suit anymore so went to the style you now have. That was about 12-15 years ago. When I finally decided to do something about the lump of metal sitting in the garage I thought I'd try for a more sporty look. Was trying some of the smaller mirror sets but they just didn't cover enough of the rear so that's when I decided on the Chevy mirrors. Not as obtrusive as the larger mirrors but still a good viewing area and I really like the style.

g,day is that a tilt front on the van as i cant see the bonnet opening line looks good

Hi. No, there's actually no bonnet. I've got a mid-mounted engine so at the time we decided that we could get away without one. I've now decided that that probably wasn't such a good idea so I have some plans to rectify that.

Hey rogue, mate i love the mirrors, and your right, the mirrors need to blend with the rest of the body, and be practical, are they power mirrors or just manual ?   I figure you have already worked out what your doing with the bonnet, here are a couple of ideas :  ;) You could use it as a tool box, and storage - or you could stick a mattress in there and create a bed  for the kids.  ;D ;D D do you have any pics of the van b4 you wrecked it.

Believe it or not, by the time I'm finished there won't really be that much room for anything. The pressurised water bottle for the engine coolant has to go under there as well as 2 sets of air horns and their associated compressors. Then there's the engine bay fuse box and the radiator with the shroud takes up quite a bit of space as well.

My scanner here at home has sucked it so I'll have to use the scanner at work to scan the photos of when I wrecked the van. I'll post them in my personal thread once I'm done them but it'll probably be a few days as the lurg is now upon me so I think there'll be a few sick days next week.

Sooooo, I had about 5 minutes to play with my new monsoon shield yesterday - After spending all sat and most of sunday acquiring my new beddy, moving the camper out of the way and tending to the black one (phew)...Will post up pics soon of it all  ;D

I held it up against the outside of the driver window and tried it on for size. looks good. What I couldn't figure out was, does it actually go into the window recess? or do they sit out over the recess and clip on that way..Probly just not enough time for me to properly play with it I guess. . . . .

If it's a similar fit to mine I think you'll find it sits on the outside. Some of the clips are quite long.

Hey Bas, I assume by 'West Coast' you mean the truck style mirrors? I used to have both fitted without any dramas. I was able to see the mirrors quite clearly through the monsoon shield.

Yea, Westcoasters, I think they got them name from the Truck drivers, with that kind of bracket / bar set up they would fit, but today the new Westcoasters are SH....t chrome and paint and rust within a couple of weeks are are a little bulky for todays custom modifications. Bas
