CF Bedford Chat / Re: Air filter?
« on: September 29, 2011, 08:28:47 AM »
Some of you other old F$#ts like me may remember that FE and FC Holdens (1956 -1960 approx) also FB and EK maybe, had oil filled air cleaners, the oil acted as a filter for airborne contaminates. You had to be extremley careful when removing the aircleaner that you didn't tilt the unit otherwise oil would spill everywhere.
You would fill them with the same oil as the motor, they took about a pint (600 ml), we thought we were in heaven when paper elements come out with the EJ model I think, it was definately with the EH
Anyway enought ramblings, Bedfords did not come out with these types so some home handyman has adapted yours.

Cheers

Supercheap sell a universal puller for about $30. I bought one 20 years ago and still using it but only for light jobs, I have used it to remove my Harmonic balancer

Have you checked that all of the bolts that hold the sump on are tight, not too tight as you can easily snap them off.

I replaced my sump gasket without raising the motor , I just dropped the sump and pushed it to one side and then the other this gave me access to the bottom of the block that the sump joined to . I removed old gasket with scrapers etc, cleaned all surfaces refitted new gasket with a generous application of ultra grey gasket joint compound and bolted the sump back on.
That was about 4 years ago no leaks since, the most difficult part to reach and clean was at the rear up against gearbox cover plate but not to bad.

Wanted / Re: INDICATOR SWITCH ARM WANTED!
« on: May 28, 2011, 09:47:55 AM »
Bought mine on ebay from the UK $38 delivered in AUS that was about a year ago, previuosly bought one from a guy in Melbourne that one cost $80 delivered to Brisbane and only lasted a year. Both were mini indicators and I had to change the plug to the Bedford one, which was a straight forward job

Driveline / Re: Loosing power uphill or under load any ideas?

Have you checked that when the mark on the harmonic balance is aligned with the TDC mark on the timing gear cover on the block that the No1 piston is in the Top Dead Center position, this can be easily done by taking the spark plug out and with a torching shining into the No1 cylinder through the spark plug hole have an assistant watch the piston come up as you turn the engine over by hand and align the timing marks

Cheers

I had a leak last week it turned out that the water was getting in past the rubber seal where the windscreen wiper drive protruded through the panel under the windscreen, might be worth a check
